Toyota Sees World Sales Drop Second Straight Year, Nikkei Says

Dec. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. expects to sell fewer than 7.5 million vehicles worldwide in 2009, down 10 percent, and the second straight annual decline, Nikkei English News reported, without citing anyone.

The back-to-back year-over-year drops will be Toyota’s first since the 1991 to 1993 period, the news service said. The company is also preparing for sales to fall 5 percent to about 8 million units in 2008, the first decline in a decade, Nikkei said.

Toyota Announces Layoffs

The layoff of 120 workers at the Toyota plant in Buffalo is hitting close to home at a bad time.

Michelle Frank, the assistant manager at Stokes Grocery in Buffalo says, "It's Christmastime. Things are rough everywhere."

Frank says her nephew will be losing his job at the plant December 5th.

"He's probably going to lose his apartment. His cell phone bill. How's he going to pay rent, cell phone, insurance things like that when you have no job?" says Frank. More...
