17. Abramoff, Bob (I think) Ney of Ohio
Problem is that the numbers of Republicans who are guilty of corruption is incredibly high. Republicans provide jobs for donations but don't get indicted for that. None of these guys were indicted or even accused of trading jobs for political donations, much less as in Alabama, an appointment to which the person had been appointed previously by a Republican in exchange for support for some policy measure. The imbalance in this respect is ridiculous. Trading political appointments for personal gain is wrong, but, when faced with a choice, politicians often choose to help people who have helped them in the past in their campaigns or with policy measures they support. That's just normal.

With Blagojevich, as far as I can tell at this point, he is accused of discussing with his aide John Harris the possibility of appointing someone to the Senate in exchange for a job for Blagojevich after leaving his present post. I have not read all the paperwork, but thus far it is unclear to me whether Blagojevich spoke to anyone other than Harris about this idea.

As for giving money to a Children's Hospital or helping the Tribune, seems to me those are discretionary decisions (as is the appointment to the Senate seat) that Blagojevich could make to people/causes who had donated to his campaign provided they were just as deserving of his help as anyone else. There may be more to the Blagojevich scandal than Fitzpatrick stated in his press conference, but I think I have summed up the content of the press conference.

If you recall there was some conjecture as to whether Sarah Palin would appoint herself to the potentially vacant Alaska senate seat. Blagovich could have appointed himself to the Illinois seat -- within his rights. He would not have been doing anything wrong had he done that.

Now that Blagojevich has been slammed with this federal complaint, he can hardly name himself to that seat (although maybe he should) and it opens the seat and the governorship to a Republican. Unless there is strong evidence against Blagojevich, I smell a rat.

Untangling The Republican Corruption Web
By: Christy Hardin Smith Wednesday April 23, 2008 9:00 am 0
Looks like the Abramoff corruption mess has netted another plea deal:

A former senior Justice Department official admitted Tuesday that he did favors for clients of lobbyist Jack Abramoff while accepting free meals at upscale Washington restaurants and luxury-suite tickets to sports games paid for by Abramoff's former firm.

In court papers, Robert E. Coughlin II acknowledged using his position as a department official to help Abramoff's former firm, Greenberg Traurig, including campaigning on the firm's behalf to secure a $16.3 million grant for a Indian tribe to build a jail.

Coughlin, 36, also set up meetings with "friendly" Justice officials to discuss the grant and intentionally cut out a Democratic-leaning official who he assumed wouldn't be open to helping Abramoff's firm, the court records show.

Coughlin, who pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to a felony conflict of interest charge, made the admissions as part of an agreement to cooperate with federal prosecutors in exchange for a lighter sentence. Prosecutors, who plan to seek four to six months in prison, declined to comment.

18. Some detail
John Rowland -- actually received personal advantage from contractors doing business with the state -- not just asking for donations or maybe a future job.

Impeachment process and Federal case

In the first year of Rowland's third term, rumors began circulating that contractors doing business with the state paid for and made improvements to his weekend cottage, that he benefited improperly from the sale of a condominium in Washington, D.C. at an inflated price, that he took gifts from subordinates in state government, and that he took partial ownership in businesses immediately before they were granted state contracts. These eventually led to federal investigations and then indictments of some of Rowland's close aides, who then cooperated with federal investigators.

Rumors continued that the investigation was building a case against Rowland himself; Rowland publicly denied the allegations.

. . . . (More)

On December 23, 2004, Rowland pleaded guilty to depriving the public of honest service. Rowland was sentenced on March 18, 2005, in New Haven, Connecticut to one year and one day in prison, four months house arrest, three years probation and community service. On April 1 he entered Federal Correctional Institution, Loretto in Pennsylvania. His Federal inmate number was 15623-014.

Sonny Perdue - - still serving as governor of Georgia from what I can tell

In mid-2003, Perdue purchased 101 acres (0.41 km2) of land next to his Houston County home, for $303,000, after negotiating directly with the owner. The purchase was done using a limited liability company named Maryson LLC, a corporation formed on July 23, 2003.<6> Maryson's registered agent was Stephan Holcomb, a Houston County dentist. Perdue appointed Holcomb, a neighbor of the governor's sister in Houston County, to the state Board of Dentistry in 2003. The lawyer who organized Maryson LLC was state representative Larry O'Neal (R-Warner Robins), the chairman of the Ways & Means committee of the House.<7> Perdue paid the 2003 tax bill on the property after it was acquired by Maryson, Houston County tax records show.

In May 2004, the land was transferred from Maryson to Perdue's own name.<6> The transfer price was recorded at $305,000. Maryson was dissolved on July 9, 2005, a year after the sale.<7>

Perdue failed to disclose the property or any interest in Maryson on his financial disclosure forms for calendar years 2003 and 2004, as required by Georgia law.<6> Five days after Maryson was incorporated in 2003, O'Neal also incorporated a partnership for Perdue and his wife, Mary, called Perdue Plantation LLC, according to the Secretary of State's Office. This partnership also was not listed on Perdue's 2004 financial disclosure report. The Secretary of State's Office said an official is required to report ownership or a fiduciary position in a company.<7>

He may have had some trouble with an ethics violations investigation, but I'm not sure whether he was penalized or punished in any way.

9. Let 'em give you heat
And then ask them, "Okay, so Gov. Blagojevich is a scumbag. But who or what did he hurt? Anyone die? Anyone lose money? Is someone in a position of power and trust that shouldn't be there? Going undetected, flying under the radar? Anyone in jail that shouldn't be in jail?"

Compare and contrast with the lies and corruption that brought us two wars of empire. Or that doomed New Orleans. Or that compromised the Department of Justice. Blagojevich has been charged and will have his day in court under the American legal system, with its rules of procedure and due process. Can we say the same for every detainee at Guantanamo? Even the ones who were released after three or four or five years? Where does the United States go to retrieve its lost standing from those crimes against humanity?

Now, you were saying about Blagojevich?

19. He blustered about needing money and how much the senate seat was worth to an aide.
I didn't hear any allegation that he actually took money from anyone. Fitzpatrick claimed that the bill was still on the desk, the hospital had not received funds. And, other than the hope for a job after leaving office, I did not hear anything about money going into Blagojevich's personal pocket as opposed to his campaign funds.

How many governors would be in prison if they could be indicted every time they appointed a campaign donor to a commission or granted their business a contract?

Personally, I'd like to have public financing of campaigns, but it would be very difficult to enforce the law on that.

I did not hear that Blagojevich received any help from a contractor in renovating his house in exchange for a government contract. The charges that were discussed in the press conference yesterday were speculative in so far as no claim was made that Blagojevich specifically requested money of something from someone and promised an act in exchange and then actually performed on the promise. Perhaps more specific information will be forthcoming, but thus far, what I have heard is unclear. Bloviating angrily to an aide is very different from actually doing something.

10. If you're in Illinois, as I am, I think taking some heat is a healthy thing.
Illinois Dems who voted for this guy need to accept their responsibility for this. We knew he was corrupt, if not evil, and yet he somehow won both the primary and the General. The party and the voters are ultimately responsible for supporting him. There are consequences for accepting this corruption, and we need to live with those consequences, in hopes that we reform the party in this state. A little heat from Republicans is the least of our problems.

If you're outside Illinois, I'd start with Bush's cronyism--"Good job, Brownie" and the like.
