Alert: Please watch C-SPAN
This morning, there is going to be something on C-SPAN at around 10 am. It might be at 10:05, or 10:10. But it will be early.

If possible, I hope some kind DUers are able to fill those less fortunate folks who are unable to watch their tv as to what Rep. Conyers has to say.

Gore's presentation is very important. But I have reason to believe that Rep Conyers has something important to say this morning. I believe that he will be speaking early.

Just listened to Bruce Fein talking about the AG Scandal - not too bad for a republican - his main theme was transparency in government - which has been lacking for quite some time.

15. Bruce Fein has taken several stances with which I agree.
He was a leading voice in opposing Harriet Miers' nomination to SCOTUS.
He has been a leading opponent of Presidential signing statements.

While he often seems to arrive at these stances by paths I wouldn't take, at least he does so with a certain kind of integrity altogether absent in the current administration.

I found myself nodding over and over again. His overriding concern is the support and importance of the Constitution, a stance to contrary to what the Bushistas say or do.

he was interesting on CSpan, as well.

Gore is thanking some committee members. He is stating that back when his father was serving, the CO2 PPM was 300, and it is now 383, and that is what brings him here. Now a sense of hope that this congress will rise to the occasion, present real solution to this crisis.

103. More from Gore.
Saying the world faces a planetary emergency, admitting that sounded shrill, but there is 4x more times people than in 1900. Says population is stabilizing as death rates come down, but with 4X more people will probably reach 9 billion by 2050. And the technology side-effects often outstrips the wisdom (learned). He said the short-term focus, the day-trading and news cycle, the polls versus going out and meeting the people, has all changed things and is part of the climate crisis problem.

He's citing the 300 movie, saying a relatively small group acted. He said likewise now, a small group, Congress, can influence things, just as the parties reached across the aisle and stood down communism. He paid tribute to Marshall's recovery plan for Europe, saying that took vision.

Gore said he has come to Congress with messages from 516000 people who have responded to his call, saying about 100 people a second have contacted his website, (from all over the spectrum, and have called on Congress to act and adopt legislation. He said the day will come when children and grandchildren look back and either ask "what in god's name were they doing while scientists issued reports calling on them to act? Letting them dump tons of pollution each day into the air?" or "how did they find the courage to rise above politics and redeem the promise of American democracy?" Gore said he would muster up all the support he could for Congress to do the right thing.

Gore suggested that first, the new evidence in the last few months shows it might be even worse than has been described. One article said the Arctic ice cap is melting more rapidly and may disappear in summer by 2040 or a bit later, and if it goes it won't come back soon, and there are glacial quakes in Antartica, going from 7 to 32 a year, and they couldn't predict what will happen there. Another article said that methane is in danger of being released. A study said there are bad fires correlated with rising temperatures, as earlier springs bring earlier melting of snowpack, dryer soils, drier vegetation=kindling. Fires in the US, Australia, Russia; Australia has a drought.

Gore said there are many other signs that there is no time to play around with this. He called for immediately freezing US CO2 emissions and then heading for 90% reductions by 2050. Next, he said the tax code should reduce taxes on employers and put in pollution taxes, not discourage work and destroy habitability. He said the employer taxes help make the US less competitive. He acknowledged this would be difficult, but said the carbon cost needs to be counted. He next said that some of the tax revenues should be directed to lower-income persons who need help with the change. He noted Kyoto has been demonized. However, he said that he had worked on arms control when he was in Congress, and Reagan eventually put forth the START treaty. He called for the US to work towards the defacto compliance with Kyoto, and for whoever is elected in 2009 to start all-out to get a treaty starting in 2010, and get India/China/Russia/etc involved sooner rather than later.

Gore said Congress should block any new coal plants that don't capture the carbon. He said that just as Congress helped DARPA develop the internet, there should be an electric net, allowing homeowners and small business to put up electrophotaics and small windmills and let them sell back energy into the grid, letting the market set the price for the energy.

Gore said that the auto milage standards should be improved, and Congress should set a date for a ban on incadescent lightbulbs, and people will all adjust if all have to do it.

Gore said you can have carbon-neutral buildings. He said people look at house prices, but the insulation and windows don't pay for themselves until years down the road. He called for a carbon-neutral mortgage association.

Gore said the SEC should require statement disclosure of carbon emissions, as this is a material risk and affects the climate crisis.

Gore thanked the committee, saying that the Japanese pair two symbols together, risk and opportunity, to describe crisis. He said the greatest generation had moral imperatives, and said the US has the opportunity to solve this historic challenge.

116. Question time.
One speaker is saying climate change should be a bipartisan issue. However, he wondered what should be the cost of this? Gore thanked the chairman of the committee for joining his group. He said that on July 7, they will launch a three-year persuasion campaign, internet, radio, as the problem is not going away, so the support needs to increase.

On the cost, he said someone has been right for 30 years about things, and that if people go about this the right way, instead of - sign for cost, it is a + sign for saving money. He admitted some solutions have - signs as well as + signs. He said that in Sweden they build some buildings with more insulation and good siting, and they benefit from the expenditure. He said the US can improve the economy's performance and save $, as pollution wastes raw materials.

Gore said the Stern report came out in the UK, and the Tories and Labour are competing with one another about who has the most effective solution, not arguing about the science. He said the Stern report said the cost to the economy of not doing things would be enormous.

121. Barton's response
He wanted to see written versions of Gore's legislative proposals. He said that science is not sure that CO2=global warming, or about global warming itself. He's now referring to the President's scientists. He said the Earth ((in the distant past)) was even warmer than today, and CO2 levels were as high as 1000 ppm. He said that sea levels were rising inches, and implied that claims that sea levels could rise 20 feet are overdone.

106. Repug shill just completely misrepresented what Lam said last
week under oath. Said there were complaint about Lam months before Cunningham mess - this has been completely discounted but he is still putting forth this lie that Lam is incompetent. He is arguing against subpoenas because they haven't had the chance to review the released emails, Chucklenuts is offering to let Meirs and KKKarl speak to them. He has drunk a whole pitcher of Kool Aid this morning.

Repugs are really scrambly this morning. Keep saying Chucklenuts offered "a good offer". Dems saying it is insulting.

Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right
