Source:Telegraph.ukPakistan claimed it was ready to go to war with India yesterday in the latest round of sabre-rattling following terrorist attacks on Mumbai.
The remarks, made by Pakistan's foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, came amid mounting tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours after India said it was keeping all options open after attacks on Mumbai which killed 172 people and wounded more than 300.
"We do not want to impose war, but we are fully prepared in case war is imposed on us," said Mr Qureshi.
"We are not oblivious to our responsibilities to defend our homeland.
"But it is our desire that there should be no war," he added.
Mr Qureshi's muscular comments came the day after Pakistan bowed to international pressure and conducted a limited crackdown on jihadi militants.
Indian and US officials have accused the Pakistani terrorist group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, of being responsible for the Mumbai massacre.
The Pakistani media reported yesterday that authorities had placed Maulana Masood Azhar, the head of a terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad, under house arrest, although this could not be confirmed.
Azhar is reported to be on a list of people India last week asked Pakistan to extradite in the wake of the Mumbai attacks. He is wanted in India over an attack in 2001 on parliament in Delhi.
On Sunday Pakistani security forces raided a camp run by a charity, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, that many believe has close links to Lashkar-e-Taiba, and arrested 15 people.
Pakistan authorities were also reported to be questioning Zaki-ur- Rehman Lakhvi, who was arrested on Saturday and who is believed by Indian officials to have masterminded the Mumbai attacks.
