Prosecutors Fired for Promoting Stated Bush Policies
From the White House in June 2004-

The USA Patriot Act brought down the artificial wall separating law enforcement and intelligence officers, allowing them to talk to each other as they work to prevent future attacks, and provided for measured changes in the law that have enabled the Federal Government to better track terrorists, disrupt their cells, seize their assets, and share information with state and local law enforcement.

The LAT reports this from Monday's document dump-

In August, McKay sent a memo to Washington asking that more law enforcement information be shared with state and local jurisdictions. "I believe McKay is way out of line here," said Mark Conner, a senior official in McNulty's office. "I don't know what McKay's motives are, but this is embarrassing and outrageous."

Something's embarrassing and outrageous alright, but it has little to do with agencies sharing information. And this one takes the freaking cake - from the Times-

According to the charts, as well as e-mails and other documents made public Monday and Tuesday.....David C. Iglesias in Albuquerque traveled so much he was considered an "absentee landlord."

Traveled a lot, did he? Huh. Wonder where he was off to-

Iglesias also responded to claims by the Justice Department his firing was due to performance and attendance issues, countering with his positive job reviews and data showing increasing numbers of prosecutions. He also noted that he is required to serve 40 days a year in the Navy Reserve.

Gee, I wonder what the Official Administration Policy is on that? The US Office of Special Counsel might know-

The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), prohibits discrimination against persons because of their service in the Armed Forces Reserve, the National Guard, or other uniformed services.

And here, in the hollow words of someone writing for that dim son of a bush, is clarification of the policy that should have protected Naval Reserve Captain Iglesias' job-

Employers play a critical role in helping the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve carry out their mission. In offices, schools, hospitals, and other workplaces, employers provide time off, pay, health-care benefits, and job security to their Guard and Reserve employees. These patriotic efforts allow our men and women in uniform to focus on their military assignments and help strengthen our country. Americans are grateful to these employers for putting the needs of our citizens and our country's safety and security first.

2. Iglasias writes today in the NYT: "Why I Was Fired"
WITH this week’s release of more than 3,000 Justice Department e-mail messages about the dismissal of eight federal prosecutors, it seems clear that politics played a role in the ousters.

Of course, as one of the eight, I’ve felt this way for some time. But now that the record is out there in black and white for the rest of the country to see, the argument that we were fired for “performance related” reasons (in the words of Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty) is starting to look more than a little wobbly.
...
Good has already come from this scandal. Yesterday, the Senate voted to overturn a 2006 provision in the Patriot Act that allows the attorney general to appoint indefinite interim United States attorneys. The attorney general’s chief of staff has resigned and been replaced by a respected career federal prosecutor, Chuck Rosenberg. The president and attorney general have admitted that “mistakes were made,” and Mr. Domenici and Ms. Wilson have publicly acknowledged calling me.

President Bush addressed this scandal yesterday. I appreciate his gratitude for my service — this marks the first time I have been thanked. But only a written retraction by the Justice Department setting the record straight regarding my performance would settle the issue for me.

We heard lots about the need for agencies to share info after Sept 11 -I just chose one of the Google hits. -And Iglasias' congressional testimony provided details about his Reserve service.
