Another Plea Possible in Iraq Atrocity

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- A 23-year-old soldier from Texas charged in
one of the worst atrocities in the Iraq war is considering a plea offer,
his attorney told a Houston newspaper.

Pfc. Bryan Howard was scheduled for trial Wednesday for his role in the
rape and murder of a teenage Iraqi girl and the slaying of her family.

His attorney, Capt. Ryan Rosauer, told the Houston Chronicle this week
that they are considering an offer to let Howard plead guilty to a lesser
offense than rape or murder. Howard is from Huffman, a small town near
Houston.

Howard was initially described as a lookout for the crime and other
soldiers from the 101st Airborne have said he was not directly involved
in the March 12 attack in Mahmoudiya, 20 miles south of Baghdad.
