Are there any non-christian sponsor a child organizations?

3. As a Christian who sponsors a child in Tanzania I would like to alter

your question a little bit. Are there any non-christian or liberal agencies that allow us to sponsor children? I go through Compassion but I would like to be involved with a more liberal group.

11. Do you correspond with the child you are sponsoring or know about

his/her progress? I think that's what I'm looking for - something to make it more real than just a charge out of my account every month. Save the Children has a wonderful ratio as it relates to the percentage of monies used for helping. I may do that one anyway.

21. Yes, we exchange letters with him all the time. I also was sent his

report card from the Mennonite school he goes to. Pics and reports for Compassion. Now that I am involved I would still be working with this little guy and his mother & grandmother no matter what other agency I find.

The thing that upsets me most is some of their policies. For instance when the cost of food started to rise I wanted to send a regular addition to our monthly cost - they only allow extra gifts to be given 3 times a year. They also have some very strict rules regarding anything about sexuality. I do not even know if we dare write about birth control and aids.

I not a Xian either and when approached will tell them to save the Brothers Grimm for the simple minded. But hey, an organization is an organization, use them as they have every intention of using you and, if it helps a kid, all's good.

I love the kind of thing 'World Vision' does, all except for the religion. I'd like to help feed and educate children, not convert them, or insist they convert before they get helped.

If you know of any secular group doing something similar, please let us know!

9. While motivated by faith, the United Church of Christ child sponsorship

program does not proselytize non-Christian children. My church sponsored a child in Dharamsala, a Tibetan Buddhist refugee. The goal of the program there is to offer support for Buddhists, not to make them Christian. That child aged out of the program, but we also sponsor two Palestinian children in Jerusalem. They're both Muslim, and, again, the point is not to make them Christian, but to meet their needs.

She works in conjunction with a group called Off the Mat, Into the World, which I strongly support.

However, it's not exactly non-religious, as there is a spiritual component to seva work.

24. I've thought about that but I have never seen a child here in the

states that looked like a skeleton and had flies all over him. If a child here looks like some of those kids in Africa with flies all over them and only bones, I would think about it. I think American children do suffer, but in most states we have a quasi social system that is suppose to help. I don't think some of these countries have any safety net.

I took the first child that came up - I didn't want to pass up one that had been on the list for some time.

When I got my packet with his picture I was so touched. I have one of him with his mom too and as a mom I am happy to help her out.


I still give to groups here at home, but wanted to do this too. I'm glad I did.

It would be amazing if 'our kids' were from the same area. Sonley is from the north east part of the country - fairly close to the Dominican Republic. I don't remember the town name right now and my paperwork is at home and I'm not.
