List of things we wouldn't have without unions?
I've noticed some union-bashing in my local paper lately. I know I've seen a list of things we wouldn't have without unions, like weekends. :) Does anybody here have that list? Thanks.

12. Regarding the 40 hour work week
It did not come about from unions but was a part of the New Deal. The 40 hour work week and overtime came about so as to force employers to hire more people. By making it more expensive for employers to work few employees long hours employers HAD to hire more people to keep their wage costs down. The idea, and it worked, was to get more people across America employed.

I would have lost my healthcare and pension when the company went bankrupt. The UAW is taking care of my needs.

The non union workers and surviving spouse lost everything!

I do not tolerate union bashing. Thanks for this thread.

7. remember this when you read about unions.....
Edited on Thu Dec-04-08 12:04 PM by madrchsod
there have been many men, women, and children who have died or suffered for the right to unionize. those rights were paid in blood and tears. the fight still goes on still around this country and around the world.

so when we list all the things the unions have given the american people remember those were paid with death and suffering .

9. You wouldn't have the backing to go up against your employer.

I can't think of an industry that doesn't have a trade organization and publication. These organizations are formed so that the industry can work in concert to promote there best interests.

I have been a manager most of my life and I have read many industry publications. There is always advice on how to lower your labor costs. It most times means busting unions because unions are the only means labor has to fight back.
