Leveling The Playing Field for the Big 3...A suggestion we Haven't Heard...
While the talking heads and TV op-ed cheering section all complain of "the unions" dragging down the Big 3 and suggest the unions take further cuts to wages and benefits, I have yet to see a single suggestion that you could ALSO level the field by repealing right to work laws in any state involved in the manufacture of automobiles or automotive component parts.
Not that I expect to hear any support for this anywhere-none of the talkers have any vested interest in improving the lot of the rank and file while almost all ARE vested in corporate interest. And while many would argue "States Rights" and reject this, I also think they reject any leveling strategy that protects union workers.
Not ONE person has suggested the way to be fair might not be to further impoverish the little guy or support the middle class. Why not RAISE costs for foreign manufactures??? Why not mandate MORE benefits for their workers. That would level the field too and the northern tier rust belt states would also get a level playing field to woo jobs when the next foreign company looks to expand here?
1. There shouldn't be any reason why it couldn't be done either.
There are separate wage laws for those in the restaurant business and everyone else. Why not separate wage laws for specific industries? Or jobs within certain industries?
