Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 12:15 AM by mymessageboardid
Not all, but roughly 80%. And it's not just hate. I DESPISE them. Just talking to them makes me want to vomit. Sorry assholes, "liberal" isn't a dirty word.

I'm out!

3. I dont hate anyone of a political party.
It just so happens that I hate people who are intolerant, close-minded and selfish. It's only a coincidence that those qualities are often found in much of the Republican base... :D

5. I don't. I have quite a few Republican friends.
Many are dicks. But I don't judge them by their political ideology if they're otherwise good people. And most of them are otherwise good people. They just have a different world view, and I try to change their minds just as they think they can change mine. That results in conversation, and we often learn things from each other.

One of my best skiing/snowboarding buddies is (was?) a hard-core Bushie who now denies he ever voted for Bush. He's actually sought out books about Bush and has come around to understanding why I've been bitching for so many years. His wife, however, is still a Fox-watching, Hannity-loving GOPper. I still like her, because she's so far out there that we can harass he for being an idiot, and she's bright enough to know that she's not in the mainstream, and she's willing to defend herself...no matter how hopelessly.

You know what these people are called?

FRIENDS.

They're good people, in general. I don't choose my friends based upon their voter registration. I choose my friends based upon the friendship and the people.

30. How are they good people?
What good do they do?

I can count my uncle, who does have one liberal viewpoint, but the rest are republican. He would do a lot for me. But when it comes to Mexicans, Arabs and Muslims, and people who might want to regulate guns, it's hard to call him a good guy.

Or all those "good" middle class people who spend so much time whining every time the poor or people in the third world get a break, like a job or even a hand-out. They are usually "good" in the general sense, but they sure don't care about their fellow man, and even complain when their less fortunate brethren get a leg up somehow.

36. You have a point...only on a certain level
My experience has been that most of my Republican friends bitch and moan and piss about the Mexicans, Arabs and Muslims, like you say. Except for that when the rubber meets the road, they're not nearly as "bad" as they seem. For instance, I play volleyball with my Republican buddy and a mutual friend -- who is a Muslim. We hang together, we enjoy dinner together, we attend parties together.

It's almost more upsetting that my Repub buddy pretends to hate everybody because they're different and don't pay taxes and blah blah blah. But I nearly a decade of close friendship I've never seen him be anything but friendly to all these people he stereotypically "hates." I think, at least in his case, it's kind of an act...he's acting the way he thinks he's supposed to act. If that makes any sense. In fact, the only place he really, genuinely acts "Republican" is when it comes to taxes. He makes a very, very good income (mid six-figures), so he hates taxes. He thinks taxes are just us liberals taking his money. He and his wife are DINKS. They moved to a rural area with no police department and virtually no services...and still bitch because the majority of the town's tax base goes to schools -- but they have no kids, so why should they pay for schools?

It's a personality flaw, to be sure. But beyond the selfishness which they cannot mitigate (the town isn't letting them off the tax hook just because they don't have kids), they're very nice, generous -- yes, generous -- people.

If life could be cut and dried, black and white, I guess I'd be forced to hate him. But life is gray. Good people can have different opinions regarding social issues. Disagreeing with me about taxation and government policy doesn't make one my enemy.

Are you sure you belong on DU?

I'm with you. I have lots of Republican friends and family. I live in a very red state. Most are good, misguided people. Some are lots of fun to hang around.

Some Democratic/progressive people are annoying as hell.

If you only associate with people who are exactly like you...criminy, no wonder the country is so polarized.

37. It is bizarre, really ...
many of my very best friends are dyed in wool Rs - both young and old, many of my most enjoyed acquaintances are Rs. As someone else noted, many of them are VERY kind, VERY generous and VERY decent people. IMO, they are more "liberal" than they think, but they have been so systemically programmed to believe that the very word is equated with evil, I can't even begin to try to say it.

I can talk politics with most, I am a moderately well known dem, and they like/respect me just the same. For the most part, it is me biting my toungue with the younger folks, the older folks aren't as course about it, and aren't as into the hating liberals thing.

I talked to a guy a month or so before the election. I knew he was an R, but he is a really outgoing and personable, community minded guy. Anyway, we had a pretty in depth poltical conversation, and it was like he was sybil - I mean, his head all but spun while he spit peas. He RAGED about how dems are really socialists, really lunatic fringe stuff like that.

I held back a bit, was frank and honest some. But, there was NO telling him different.

Just bizarre.

Again, I am a moderately well known local D. By happenstance I ended up taking a nonprofit job that has very direct connections to a big name local R, who has run for very high office, but not made it. Everyone who works for him are his friends, and supported his campaigns. They are all very nice to me, and our party stuff does not effect how they treat me. But, they have swallowed the ideology hook, line and sinker. No telling them different.

I also will say this - my true kindred spirits often are progressives, but there most certainly are those democrats that ARE annoying as hell.

10. I have no republican friends
I have, in the past, had more conservative friends.
Most of the time, being conservative, they simply are not the type of people i'd like to spend time with. They don't make "good" friends.
The rest of 'em? After having discussions where I actually show them the truth about various issues, they stop being republicans anyway.

11. It's basically come down to a character issue
Anyone who would willingly associate with the Republican party these days is no one I want in my life- and no one who I'd want to work with.

Bottom line- among other things is that they'll stab you in the back every time if they somehow see it in their interests to do so.

12. I hate their views and the damage it does to the country
Sadly most of diehard conservative idealogy comes down to bigotry, racism and ignorance. And it sucks that people who subscribe to these ideas control so much of our country. As Paul Krugman said, if not for racial intolerance we'd have universal healthcare. In the 40s it was sunk because of fears it would lead to integrated hospitals. After the south turned republican in anger over the civil rights movements, the dems didn't have enough seats to get it passed.

There are a few rational republicans left, but they are the minority at this point. The party is totally in the hands of dittoheads now. Their love of Palin is really the last straw (they learned nothing from the last 8 years that picking an unqualified retard because you want to have a beer with him/her is a bad idea), these people can't be allowed to control the fate of the nation anymore. I'm glad they are a vanishing breed. Most conservatives are in their 50s or 60s now while youth voters are trending dem 2-1 over the GOP.

http://www.eyeon08.com/2007/06/28/elephant-in-the-mirror/

Wait another 10 years, hopefully they will be a true minority party by then.

Idiots who vote against their own self interest get my ire. The stupid proud ignorant nationalists who do not want educated opinions but prefer to wave the flag or cross (or both) need to get kicked in the nuts...hard.

People who vote for their own self interests (be it, due to a lack of foresight, short-term or otherwise) do not.

that he wouldn't recognize whatsoever. I don't think the original concept was even remotely close to what it's become, and I hate that it thrives on division (I'm being polite).

I don't think, as a political party, it's origins were based on evil, selfish destructive tenets. I do think that this is what it has become, however...

and all put these worker hating, racist, corporate fascist republicans in power (as do many "moderates").

Yet the the assholes republicans don't mind taking advantage of liberal policies like Social Security, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, 40 hr. work week, sick pay, vacation pay, worker safety laws, overtime - that the republicans have slowly gotten reduced and they want all worker rights & voices (unions) gone, by purposely gutting the programs, and underfunding them, but using our taxes to pay corporations making billions in their wars for profit. Yet the republican consistently vote against more benefit for veterans, cost to much they say...well who's taxes are fighting their wars for profit? The workers....the very first thing Bush and the republicans did when Bush took office was cut corporate taxes and taxes of the rich, the corporations and the wealthy don't pay taxes....but my taxes have gone up every year since the asshole Bush took office, because I'm a worker.

Now we have a ten trillion dollar plus deficit, trillions more since Bush took office & spent the surplus he was left with, to protect SS, because republican want to bankrupt all social programs, they want the money for their war & corporations, not for the people...and the deficit has gone up each and every year Bush has been in office, a fact, look it up fucking republican sheep the biggest government in history under Bush. Bush just spent and spent his first six years and has kept pace the last 22 month's since the republicans lost the house and Bush just veto's bill after bill the Dems have put forth in the 20 month they held the house.

All Republicans voted against and despise (New Deal) and want to destroy all unions...the only voice workers can have against corporate lobbyist, corporate billions and influence....as corporations continue to lay-off, and cut workers wages & benefits while the CEOs enjoy huge bonus' even when they run their companies in to the ground and the workers are the ones that lose their jobs as these same corporations shift the workers jobs overseas, for even more profit, while receiving tax breaks, subsidies and gouging us with their unregulated products....they pollute the water, air & land and want more public lands to do so at our expense....they want workers tax dollars to bail them out for their greed as they screamed for deregulation to run wild & police themselves....they hate workers having any kind of voice and want to get rid of all workers rights....

I hate all republicans with a passion....I am a worker and a proud liberal! REPUBLICAN is a dirty filthy word, as well as their greedy, selfish, elitist ideology & agendas!! Now Bush still has almost two long month's left to go, to fuck things up even more for the workers and help out his corporate friends...and that's exactly what he's doing.

Name one thing a Bush or any republican has done to help the worker? As my taxes always go up under republicans and the rich taxes always get cut!

44. I wonder what kind of "progressive" claims to hate 40 million people they don't know?
I perfectly understand hating specific people who's activities and philosophies are well documented, like Bush, Cheney, Hitler, etc.

I don't understand assuming you know exactly what 40 million people you don't know believe, what their motives are for being Republican, whether they do good things in their community, or whether they are nice people to their friends and neighbors. More disturbing to me, is that mass hate like this is what historically sets the stage for mass crimes. Just perpetuates the cycle.

Tell me, what would you do if you suddenly had complete power over these 40 million people you hate?
