Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I just signed up for Food Stamps and Unemployment!
The economy is working just great for us! AND and and, we make too much money to qualify for heat assistance! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! AND and and, we gave our notice to move because we can't afford the rent and our landlady is starting eviction proceedings because we broke the lease (because there is STILL raw sewage leaking in the walls from the two condos above us which she refuses to get on the condo associations ass about)...weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! AND and and, our car broke down on Thanksgiving Day so we had to put $400 on our credit card to get it fixed so we could drive 120 miles back home after visiting relatives we have not seen in years. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! AND AND AND Mr Gray has to have a non-melanoma tumor removed from his arm in two weeks after already waiting three weeks because we have no health insurance!!!!!WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I am so excited to be alive right now I can't tell you! Life is just so great, yessiree. Good thing I am whacky and insane otherwise I'd be sucking on the tailpipe of my Toyota.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I am still partially there. Teetering on the edge. I know how it feels to feel like everything is coming apart and you can't do anything to stop it. Just try to get through a day at a time, find some small thing to cling to.

It will get better.

Middle class friends I know who made good money contracting are really hurting...close to losing their homes. And walk throught the supermarket and look at the price of bread and milk. I just ran into Syndi who ran for state rep here in NH who told me she waters down her gallon of milk.

136. We Should Have Always Been All In This Together And . . .
Maybe things would not have gotten so bad for you and for all of us. I feel for you and hope that everything gets better for you. It is certainly hard for too many good people who have worked hard and are willing to continue to work hard. Horror stories everywhere. People losing everything. I know it's hard to say "think positive", but just keep trying to make things better and eventually things will be. I am not a religious person, but I've been low and rose up from it by staying focused, being willing to push forward and having a sense of humor like you seem to have. I always say "when you stop laughing you die." Best of luck to you.

137. Awesome post.
I belong to some 12 step groups and I get a lot of support there. It's unreal how many of us are losing everything. What I want to know is, once you lose everything where do you go? It's beginning to be like it was in the 30's where extended families all crammed together in the same living space.

139. It's Sad To Say But You Have To "Start Over"
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 09:57 AM by AccessGranted
Thank you for your comment. It's like starting out in life all over again. You go from having something to having nothing, which is even worse if you do not have a support system - family who can help or a close friend. And it's very hard to ask for help with wounded pride and an overwhelming sense of failure (which may not even be your own fault). It's adding insult to injury. But there are times in life when pride can be a curse. If you have someone you know close to you who may be able to help, then ask them. I was in a similar situation a while back. Running from an abusive marital situation, I ended up alone with three small children and no support system. I lived in my car, homeless shelters and battered women's shelters on and off for almost a year, but I never gave up. I couldn't. I recovered amazingly and I am a better person for it in many ways. It made me do things I would not have done if I'd remained content and didn't better myself. Did it take remarkable strength? Yes. Did I cry and damn near die inside? Yes. Did I curse the cosmos and blame everything? Yes. Did I want to say it screw it all and just give up? Yes. But all of those thought processes were counter-productive to my existance and when I realized that, I was able to climb out of the muck and rise. You have to un-surround yourself kind of. Recreate who you are and how you think about your life and the path it took. Blaming and whining is a waste of time. Start yourself over without relying on external things. Begin again. Don't be afraid to look deeply in the mirror. It may hurt, but it will make you stronger.

I've always worked even after my children were born but I just didn't make enough money to pay rent and daycare for several children and everything else. It wasn't like I was lazy or stupid or anything. Life just happened while I was simply trying to live. I could tell you some horror stories that would make you laugh and cry, but I will just say that I recovered and you will too. I am also humble enough to know that I could hit bottom again at the drop of a dime no matter what I do and I'm prepared for that because I survived it the first time.

37. I am so sorry, I have had those same experiences and
know what it feels like. I am clinging week to week to what work I can find right now and expect the whole deck of cards to fall any time now.

I know personally dozens of good hard working people facing evictions and loss of heat in their homes right now.

There are few words to describe how it feels, but you have expressed it well enough for me to feel it. Perhaps because I know the feeling I can understand and understand also how frustrating and yes frightening it is. I wish I had the answers. I wish I could help. I wish you better times ahead.

Mostly I wish at the time of this post I knew something that could be said to make you feel better.
Instead all I can offer is my empathy and a

from what direction the NEXT kick in the pants is going to come from. My only good reliable coping mechanism, when life is the shits, is to take pleasure in small things: a new magazine and a cup of cocoa, a day off when it's snowy outside, a movie or board-game night with family or friends, etc. I hope things turn around for you soon.

We can all blame bush but sorry to say
It started before his election day
Republicans were in power even then
Although Clinton was the president.

(edited to add that things have continued to get worse under bush due to them having complete power, plus the idiot in the WH appointed his own idiots to run the country. May 1-20-2009 bring us some hope and help in getting relief especially for those of us suffering from the results of the power/money hungry idiot's rule over this county.)

That landlady's greed reminds me of a case I saw on Judge Judy awhile back. The walls & ceiling of the apartment were ruined & discolored due to broken pipes from the upstairs bathroom, & the landlady was brazen enough to take her to court for breaking the lease. Landlady got a chewing out from Judge Judy &, of course, lost the case.

You're in my prayers. I sure hope things get better for you.

I've found landlords to be greedy, as though renters are nothing more than cash cows for their generally high standard of living.

When my husband & I first married, we lived in a duplex owned by a family living next to it. After our rent was raised, we were told that everyone was using too much water. Lo & behold, the teenage daughter got a new, expensive car at that time & we believe our rental increase was for her car payments. The car didn't last long -- the daughter wrecked it, poor thing.

Good luck in getting justice. You deserve it.

Mr Gray is one sharp cookie. He has letters that he sent asking her to fix things and we took pictures. We also know from talking with the maintenance guy that the property violates many safety rules, especially fire safety. The fire alarms do not work and the porches are all rotting out causing someone to fall through last summer.

61. Hang in there, GreyWarrior...
If there's anything I've learned in my turbulent life of ups and downs, "this too shall pass." Sometimes it seems like there's just no way out of a bad situation, and then - bam - something happens and it all changes for the better. Of course, the opposite happens, too, as you well know, but life goes in cycles. In adversity you build your strength.

I have faith in you.

or something like that. It connects you to local charitable orgs that I believe, coordinate into ONE group. They got me out of a 'one month rent due' ordeal, food, and I know they do other things as needed.
If you haven't tried it already, Call 211 and tell them you need some help. They will assist where they have the availability.

Best I can offer you, & will be thinking of you & wishing for a magic carpet to carry you through this.
It is temporary.

I'm trying to get over a lot of health issues but everything that goes on with me - between the bureaucracy and the petty little details and the fact that my wife and I are stone cold broke with me out of work - leads to half-assed care and stuff I can't even afford.

I don't even want to get into all the specifics right now, but believe me, I know exactly where you're coming from with your frustration and anger. If it weren't for my wife I'd have been a pile of ashes years ago.

Let college students collect welfare. So every college student in America collects, SFW? It would still cost us nothing.

And College students will be like the ones in Europe, who CAN go on the Dole if they ever worked before, while they are in College.

Guess what: Europe works.

135. There's no way you can be evicted from a place
that has raw sewage leaking through the walls. If anything, you should be able to get free rent and damages until the repairs are made, no? I sued my landlord in Mass. for essentially the same thing. Free rent; all damages went to the lawyer. Of course the following year the landlord drew up a new contract prohibiting music, visitors, umbrellas in stairwells, etc. as punishment. Fucker.

Hang in there, gray. You certainly aren't alone.

142. I am so sorry
you are going through this. Hang in there and know you are not alone. There are so MANY that got sucked into this mess from the likings of the Bush debacle... This will pass, like a fucking kidney stone, but it will pass.
