Wife writes about war hero's final hours
BY JOE DEJKA
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Dena Yllescas wants people to know this about her husband:

He was a hero off the battlefield, too.

Rob Yllescas, 31, an Army captain, whose wife grew up in Nebraska, died Monday from injuries he suffered Oct. 28 in Afghanistan.

His wife and two daughters, Julia, 7, and Eva, 10 months, were at the hospital in Bethesda, Md., on Monday evening, mourning his loss with family.

"He was my hero and my daughters' hero," said Dena, a native of Osceola, Neb. "They absolutely adored him, and they didn't care that he was a soldier or not. He was their daddy."

He was wounded in an explosion in Afghanistan, losing both legs and suffering head injuries. He died at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.

His father-in-law, Al Gissler of Osceola, said Rob had made progress and looked good a few days ago, but his condition deteriorated over the weekend.

FULL story at link.

I'm home from work. Sick. I don't feel much like being online, but had to share this.

2. Damn.
Such a terrible loss for his family. Thanks for posting this. He deserves the respect.

3. HOO-AH!
Sorry, but every time I hear a story like this, it brings to my mind all that footage of our soldiers arrogantly and bellicosely shouting "HOO-AH" into the cameras as they left for Iraq. (And, of course, of the press and most of the public hooting "HOO-AH!" right back.)

This dead young man, and all the other dead and maimed victims of Bush's hateful and pointless war -- not to mention the trillions of dollars in waste and damage -- are what "HOO-AH" really translates into.

Maybe these gung-ho types will hesitate before they again succumb to the HOO-AH mindset.
