Chris Matthews: Obama's Diverse Cabinet Like "Many Faces Of Benetton," "Clearly Representative Of America"

Huffington Post | December 1, 2008 01:06 PM

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/01/chris-matthews-obamas-div_n_147437.html

Chris Matthews praised the image of diversity coming out of Barack Obama's press conference Monday morning, comparing it to a United Colors of Benetton ad.

Matthews said that Obama "is very aware of the picture he's offering as well as the words" and that his picture Monday morning — three women, three African Americans, one Republican (and someone who has worked with Republicans, in Gen. Jones) — sends a clear message.

"Clearly it has the picture we're looking for, many faces of Benetton or whatever you want to call it," Matthews said, "but clearly representative of America more than previous administrations."

Benetton is a clothing brand known for its inclusive advertising featuring diverse models.

1. So?
He's right. What's the big deal?

It's an accurate and culturally appropriate observation, in my opinion.

2. He's trivialized it...
...the minute a political team equals a marketing slogan it has been "dumbed down."

6. He's a new commentator
It's his job to put things into a context that can be understood by many.

He did his job. I think it's an astute and relevant observation.

Don't be so hard on the guy, and let's not get high-handed. It's hardly "dumbing down" to invoke Benetton.

4. See if Obama was a (R) he'd be crowing about how "diverse" his cabinet is
Democrats don't worry about such nonsense.

7. It's Okay
Speaking about diversity in our newly elected government is a good thing. Benetton ran a very successful campaign on "the colors of" - everyone of a certain age remembers those pictures of all those kids in fuzzy warm sweaters.

9. Good for Matthews. His cabinet, like the convention, looks like America.
And the Republicans have a lot of work to do to create that tent they keep talking about.

12. kind of a boneheaded thing to say (like a lot of what he says)
but it's better than what Scarborough said...that two whites were put on either side of Obama to make him look more AMERICAN. I shit you not.
