Tina Fey explains her facial scar: when she was five years old she was slashed by a stranger

Tina Fey graces the cover of the January issue of Vanity Fair, and in an interview with Fey and her husband Jeff Richmond inside, her distinctive facial scar is finally explained as a random childhood slashing.

From the NY Post, which got an early look at the article:

The beautiful funnywoman vamps it up for the January edition of Vanity Fair (below), where she and hubby Jeff Richmond note she's never talked publicly about a mystery slashing incident, which happened when she was 5.

"It was in, like, the front yard of her house, and some body just came up, and she just thought somebody marked her with a pen," Richmond says.

The "30 Rock" star has refused to discuss the scar. "It's impossible to talk about it without somehow seemingly exploiting it," she says.

23. Actually they caught the guy who slashed her face. Here's a picture of him
He's doing community service for it as we speak.

9. Somewhat visible here: That's terrible that that happened.
I had a couple of creepy close calls with adults when I was a kid.

I honestly never really noticed it, and I watch 30 Rock all the time.

10. Make up
I'd bet the vast majority of time we see her she is wearing just enough make up to cover it up.

24. I didn't either, but I looked at the images that BA linked to below
Lower left side of the face.

Now that I know that it is there, it is pretty obvious. But I wouldn't have picked it up otherwise.

i have a large scar on my face - bigger than tina's and very visible - from an auto accident at age 18. it changed the course of my life, but i rarely think about it anymore and family and friends don't either.

21. Yeah, I guess you do get over it. Just the fear as a child of being attacked
would be bad, not really the scar. Glad to see you did not let it stop you from living your life!

14. Fey's main problem: She's not funny
Except for her Sarah imitation, she has never been funny -- not once. This is a big problem for SNL because she was head writer. Which meant that you could watch SNL for years without so much as cracking a smile.

19. I thought she was the best part of SNL for a while.
She's got the perfect sense of humor for my tastes. Dry and subtle, yet rarely what I'd consider to be mean. And like most everyone else, I think she knocked it out of the park with her Palin impersonation.

20. I think she is hilarious, particularly in "30 Rock", the funniest show on TV.
I agree with you on many things, Hamden, but not this.

I thought she was great on Weekend Update, I think her sitcom is wonderful, and one of the very few things I watch on TV at all.

30. She's a great foil to Alec Badlwin--- who I just adore on 30 Rock
He's always been hilarious when he hosted SNL, too.... Who'da thunka guy that could be such a jackass in real life (albeit OUR Progressive Jackass--LOL) could be so damned funny.

Tina's great.

And trust me, loving Tina Fey is totally the party line.

she writes and produces and it's hysterically funny.

32. Holy fuck! I knew she had the scar, I've noticed the scar before.
I never, ever, ever would have thought it happened the way it did. I thought maybe it was from a car accident or something.

Holy shit. I'm dumbfounded.

Having said all the above, I still think Tina Fey rocks, is sexy as all get out, brilliant, funny, gorgeous, and a gift to those of us who appreciate her.

Thank you, Tina.
