Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 07:13 AM by Philosoraptor
I'm so sick of people saying 'have a blessed day'. But then, I'm just an old crank atheist, but it sounds SOOOO condescending, even insulting, like a slap in the face. If anyone says it to me, I just say, 'happy holidays'.

1. I just noticed it said it on a Popeye's receipt
At the bottom. So I get a free "blessed day" when I buy a two-piece meal. Wheee!

I'm with you, 'raptor. It does make me grind my teeth when people presume I would even CARE to be "blessed."

Popeyes got sold a ton of years ago, but when he owned it, it never would have said that - it would have been more in the vein of: "Your New Secretary is always hotter than your last".

5. You'll get that pretty much anyplace in the middle or lower parts of the country.
When you live on the coasts it is easy to forget or not realize how whacked out too many people are in the "real America". I don't know if they are really a majority, but there sure are a lot of them and they all feel entitled to spew on everybody else.

11. I live my life on the 'coasts'
and I hear religious greetings weekly. The west coast just passed a religious based discrimination law against my people, spewing all over others. Some of the largest and most deadly of the mega chruchs are on the coasts- Rick Warren, Hutherson in WA, McClurkin, these are costals folks. If it were only the middle and lower parts of the country, I'd be fine, but it is not. It is Irvine and Seattle, it is NYC and Los Angeles.
I wholly disagree that this is contained to regions, and I see the most vitriolic of the haters coming from the coasts. They are con men, and con men go where the dollar dwells. The tens of thousands that attend mega churchs on the coasts spew like the rest of them. And they join hands with other haters to pass law against my family, while erstwhile liberals still focus on how hip the coasts are, not due to reality, but from memory. Once upon a time, the coasts were bastions of free thought. Once upon a time.

as things get worse.

It is just much more common in the aforementioned places.

I don't use the phrase, but it's just a SAYING, people. It's colloquial. It means NOTHING other than "Have a nice day," or "Hope you have a good one."

God, some people on this board get their panties in a twist of the stupidest and smallest things.

I can't hear that line without an internal chuckle. A waitress once told my father that, and he said "I have a good one. I want a bigger one". Parents, you can dress them up but you can't take them out :)

"This is a Christian nation"

"Marriage is between a man and a woman"

"Angels are watching over you"

"It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"

...and so on.

214. Not IMO. Bless you, following a sneeze does stem from an ancient misconception
and is simply a colloquialism. We have many of these; "goddammit" comes to mind. Rarely does the person saying really intend to call upon a deity to damn something or someone.

Have a blessed day carries an implication and direction.

186. It's a little different
It has a meaning more like "Blessed be that which is" or "All that is, is blessed" or "all that is is sacred".

It is also used as a greeting or a good-bye.

And is used within certain Wiccan rituals in way a bit less known but more like the way you were thinking of it.

10. Yes, it's annoying and annoying, unctuous, self indulgent people say it.
It's very repetition screams "I'm asking MY GOD to bless you, and that's good for something."

"Blessed" implies that God is ever at work, smiling on those who kiss his ass, and frowning on those who don't. It's not luck. It's not misfortune. It's GOD micromanaging every aspect of their life, your life, and everyone's life.

Suggestion? "How can I, when I know that all over the world God is allowing people to starve to death?"

So god gets credit for all good things, including incomplete devestation, but dodges responsibility for all bad things. Sorry, but if god can make free will, he can circumvent it. Anyway, there is no free will. Individuals appear to have it, but in large numburs human behavior is as predictable as gravity.

in the spirit in which they were given.

The fact that you have to assign all kinds of ulterior motives to an objectively benign phrase, and use it as an excuse to try to look clever about religion means you very much give a damn.

We're trying to have a society here, and if the good wishes of a stranger give you fits, I suggest you go live on an island with those fools who get in a twist when someone tries to wish them a "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas."

You sound like Bill O'Reilly arguing that wishing someone "happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" is secret code in the war on Christmas.

Hypersensitivity via projection is foolish (and exhausting) no matter who is doing it.

159. Again, you sound just like the War-on-Christmas'ers
Using your logic, why say "happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" if you aren't anti- religion?

Most people say things like "have a blessed day" or "happy holidays" because they are expressing a positive thought to another human being. The former isn't promoting religion any more than the latter is condemning it.

195. Again, no I don't.
That is a false equivilency and you are using a straw-man argument. This has nothing to do with Bill O'Reilly and his made-up culture war. There is no "war on Christmas" but there is a very definite effort to snuff out unbelief.

Besides, the objective facts are on the side of the nonbeliever.

Is it really worth getting upset by something that was intended to be a kind word?

15. These types of threads are so tiresome.
It's not even that they are assuming you are a Christian. It's that the born again crowd is so ebullient in their newfound path that they want to share it with you. They want you to feel as wonderful as they do.

It's tantamount to the guy who quits smoking and can't wait to preach to those still smoking about how wonderful he feels.

Those who wish someone a 'Blessed Day' are doing it out of joy, not a sense of superiority.

188. No- what I mean is that the OP ought to stop and think about his reaction
The majority of the time the intention of such a phrase is one of good. We have so many awful things in the world, this seems an odd thing to allow yourself to get upset about.

Once upon a time I felt like the OP.

I was new to my faith and had a really thin skin when it came to Christianity.

So I do get where they are coming from.

It's more about how you react to someone's comment rather then the comment itself.

I stop and ask myself: If this were a Hindu or a Muslim or a Buddhist or a Native American offering me good wishes with a religious based phrae would I be angry? Or am I anger because it is a Christian doing it and I have some resentment towards that particular religion (which I did, and still do)?

51. According to legend.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneeze
In Europe, principally around the early Middle Ages, it was believed that one's life was in fact tied to one's breath - a belief reflected in the word "expire" (originally meaning "to exhale") gaining the additional meaning of "to come to an end" or "to die". This connection, coupled with the significant amount of breath expelled from the body during a sneeze, had likely led people to believe that sneezing could easily be fatal. This theory, if proven conclusively, could in turn explain the reasoning behind the traditional "God bless you" response to a sneeze, the origins of which are currently unclear.

superstitions do die hard, don't they?

Personally, I'd rather see people say "bless you" after someone farts....reason being that a cough or sneeze is easily replaceable by breathing in air through the same nose or mouth it went out.

Farts....dangerous...how do we replace the air that came out "down there"? :scared:

Who was it...George Carlin? Someone did a skit about a man who had, at 35 years old (or thereabout) never farted...then one day he farts...he immediately goes into a panic and worries that he'll never stop...that he'll fly around the room backwards till his eyes bug out and collapse on the floor like an airless balloon....

50. Good-bye
Goodbye.

This phrase comes from God be with you. It has been shortened over the years since 16th century. Shakespeare used "God be wy you." The substitution for good for God seems to have been mainly due to the influence of such phrases as " good day" and " good night."

asking someone how they are and they respond, "Oh, I'm blessed!" Wishing blessings on someone else isn't condescending, but asserting that you yourself are blessed basically implies that the listener is not, and that's just rude.

No. They said THEY were. They never implied you weren't.

What is up with DUers upending comments? I had a discussion yesterday about "Christian drivers" in a thread. Someone said Christian drivers should be courteous. They did not say a word about other faiths. No one said that drivers of other faiths were less courteous, but someone got their knickers twisted thinking that the poster meant people of other faiths weren't. The post simply meant that if Christians are following Jesus' teachings, then they would be courteous drivers. Period.

63. Sorry, you're wrong.
I ask someone a simple question, really just a rhetorical question since I'm most likely not that interested in the person's actual health--I'm just being conventionally polite. Their response is to claim a special, divine status. I'm sorry but that is an entirely inappropriate response, and yes it most certainly does imply something about me and about how that person sees themselves. They obviously feel it necessary to emphasize to me, completely unasked, how pious and un-sinful they are, leaving no conversational opprtunity for me to respond effectively, even if I wanted too. F*ck that--it's the very definition of condescending. Jesus would slap that person for such behavior.

55. Here is how I look at this.....
I am all for people saying 'happy holidays' because it encompasses people of all religions rather than being restrictive. At the same time, I do not hold it against people if they wish me a merry Christmas because they are being friendly and the world needs as much positive energy as it can get.

I am Buddhist and so I do not believe in the entity people call 'God'. But that did not stop hubby and I from saying we felt blessed when we had our first child. Feeling you are blessed with good things does not have to tie in with a God. It is more like you are lucky to have such good things come your way.

I have been wished a blessed day before and have never taken exception to it. How wonderful is it that a stranger would wish good things for you? So many people are willing to cut in lines, cut you off in traffic and try to take you for what they can. In a world like that I think it is great when some people just want to get along.

Once I gave some money to a guy on a corner and he said, "God bless". I VERY nicely explained that I am Buddhist and do not believe in God. The poor guy stammered not knowing what to say and I felt badly because he only meant well. I have never spoken up like that again because there is enough discomfort in the world. Why cause someone a discomfort when they are only wishing you well?

It is all about respecting each other whether it is in regards to how you wish someone a good season or how you tell them to have a good day. I doubt that person was out to get you or cause you distress. I figure that they really did want to wish you well in the human race. They did so in the best way they understood how. Not all of us are on the same religious/spiritual plain but I do think most mean well. More tolerance, love and understanding would make this an even better place to call our home.

When I am signing off on an email I always evaluate it to see if it can come across in a fashion it was not meant to. It is so easy to misunderstand intentions when you can not hear inflection. If I want someone to know I care or that what I wrote is meant to be taken positively , and as a friend, I always sign it 'in metta' - this means 'in loving kindness'. I hope this reply will be taken in the positive and friendly manner it was meant. Please excuse me for using what I have learned in Buddhism, but.........

In Metta,

demgurl

61. When I was a kid...
..."bless-ed" (pronounced as two syllables) was a substitute for "damned."

Cracks me up when people tell me to have a blessed day.

69. That reminds me of something
I had either heard or read, regarding the term "Bless his/her heart" that people who live in the South sometimes say as a euphemism for "That damned fool" or maybe even "That fucking idiot" depending on how stupid the person was being...

as in, "Granny, cousin Bub is drunk and sleepin' in the pigpen again"

Granny..."Well, bless his heart, he never did have a lick of sense"

Like I said...it's only something I had either heard or read...

PS....I'm a New Englander and don't know much about stuff like that...

171. A Southern friend once told me that good Southern girls
go to charm school to learn how to exclaim, "How nice." Evidently that is the accepted Southern substitute for "Fuck you."

Example:

Amanda: "Billy Bob bought me this little mink coat at Neiman-Marcus."

Donna Gail: "How nice!"

To me, it's just another way for some of them to surreptitiously get their "message" out without seeming like they're actively proselytizing. Like a free advertisement of their religious faith. I don't need (nor do I WANT) to know if someone is a Christian or Wiccan or Pagan or Atheist or whatever.

"Have a good day" should be good enough.

82. I don't think the "blesser" was
It's a benediction; hoping for something good for the person. It doesn't really matter what the person being blessed believes. Assuming the person saying "have a blessed day" was sincere, he was wishing the person well as he understands "well" to mean, not trying to foist his beliefs on the OP.

Yes, I know there are plenty of passive aggressive ways to say "have a blessed day", but that's true for "good morning", too (c.f. Gandalf's conversation with Bilbo).

85. Oh, relax.
I'm agnostic/atheist depending what day of the week it is, and about 95% of the people in my experience who say "have a bless(ed) day" are African American ladies working crappy service jobs. If they want to wish me happy thoughts from Jesus, or whatever, it's fine with me. Your response is essentially the same as those whackos who get all worked up over "happy holidays" vs "merry Christmas." Not everyone is capable of anticipating and accommodating your particular religious/philosophical viewpoint. Consider yourself lucky that they bother to wish you anything but a swift kick in the ass.

"Have a blessed day" to me means to have a day of good fortune. I don't translate it to "Accept Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior or languish in the everlasting fires of torment and pain". Maybe it is what they mean but it is just too wordy in the latter form. I gots more important things to worry about.

Is it any less ridiculous to be upset by "have a blessed day" than "happy holidays?" Anyone who gets worked up over either perfectly benign phrase is just looking to be offended by something.

I guess some people just aren't happy unless they are making everyone else miserable.

152. "...some people have a really rough time of it, don't they?"
That's an ignorant thing to say. The believers of this world can do their believing in public on tax-exempt property. They are assumed to be the norm and feel like they have a right to make others respect their beliefs. Messages from church signs to radio announcers to media generally to politicians to money tell us that the point of view of the believer is right. On the other hand, publicly declaring a lack of belief can get a person fired (regardless of the law.) It is assumed that rejecting the impossible idea of a god also means rejecting all ethics, morals and compassion. It is assumed that nonbelievers have no purpose for existence, are sad and lonely and will eventually burn in hell forever. Being a nonbeliever is of course an implicit criticism of belief even if we do shut up. That alone is cause for offense. To be a nonbeliever is to make oneself a social pariah for the sole reason that we refuse to accept what is impossible.

What would believers say if atheists put up billboards saying "There is not god" bought tax exempt land to start a K-12 school with the sole purpose of turning people away from god? What if we had TV networks raising money to fight the scourge of Christian superstition? What if we greeted people with, "Be glad there's no god?"

And this is in the 21st century United States. Though most of western history, expressing even a different opinion about god would get a person hanged IF he were lucky! This is still the case in much of the world. People are routinely tortured and killed for religious "crimes" in Islamic countries. In much of the Spanish-speaking world, people still live in grinding poverty under ecclesiastical law.

So don't lecture us about the harmlessness of imposing their god on us even if it is just a little bit.

If you don't want to believe in jebus, go have yourself a great old time. I certainly won't force you, and if anyone tries I will put you in touch with a good civil rights lawyer. If you think we should have a solid wall of separation between church and state that keeps each out of the other's business, I strenuously agree.

But, you don't have a right remain free of contact with people and beliefs that you don't care for. If a bigot gets upset when someone wishes him "Feliz Navidad" instead of "Merry Christmas," then that's too bad for that asshole. If a fundamentalist Muslim gets upset by the sight of Easter eggs on the store shelf, too bad for that asshole. If a fundamentalist Christian gets upset that his employer recognizes Yom Kippur as a holiday, too bad for that asshole. If the OP gets his undies in a bunch because someone might wish him a "blessed day," too bad for him.

It's just a phrase. If you don't like it, ignore it. It's not like they are insulting your mother. Sheesh.

I'm not Jewish, but I've had Jewish people wish me "Mazel Tov" when I mention some good news. I don't mind it at all--in fact, I like it. They've got a sincere faith belief, and they want to include good wishes to me in their belief. Whether or not I share that faith doesn't matter.
