If Klaatu came here today and used this place as a litmus test for the human race the movie wouldn't have ended with: "Gort, Klaatu Barrada Nickto" It would have ended with "Gort, Fucking Toast Em'".

And he would be right.

We used to have a common enemy. One that we could all agree was {stupid, evil, horrible, etc}. That enemy is defeated.

So we naturally turn on each other.

Still, rejoice that the real enemy IS defeated. But like any true evil thing, defeated is not exactly dead. And that enemy will use our time of inward anger that things are not "perfect" to everyone's satisfaction to buy time and rise again.

And we repeat the cycle.

Human nature.

So I have nothing to add for comfort, except this fun fact...

Gort had two costumes, one with the seam in the front, one with a seam in the back. They swapped out he suit depending on which direction he was facing, so he always looked seamless.

I love that movie...
