Boy dies after using too much deodorant
Boy dies after using too much deodorant
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2008/11/21/1226770737888.html

November 22, 2008

LONDON: A 12-year-old English boy collapsed and died from heart problems after spraying too much deodorant in the family bathroom.

Daniel Hurley was overcome by the solvents in the can and collapsed in the bath. He died five days later in hospital.

An inquest heard that Daniel died from cardiac arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythms, caused by solvents in the Lynx Vice spray.

Unilever, which makes Lynx, warns on the cans against over-spraying and says it must be used in well-ventilated places.

Why oh why do we insist on using too many chemicals on and in our bodies and houses?

1. Probably believed all those commercials
with the hot models literally throwing themselves at the handsome 20 year old actor who just sprayed themselves.

12 year old.

Sigh.

3. This story makes me sick.
In this day and age, to still be using chemicals on our bodies!!! I gave up mainstream deodorants years ago, and certainly don't recall the last time I ever sprayed some! Having said that, it DID take some trial and error to find a natural deodorant that passes the test: It's called Herbal Magic. I know, riveting name, huh? It works all day! BUT I digress... WHAT KIND OF PARENT WOULD BUY A KID SPRAY-ON deodorant??? I thought aerosols were banned in the first place!

46. I gave up deodorant...
8 years ago, too irritating. Have you ever read the ingredients? And we apply that stuff on our lymph nodes. The only time I sweat in the pits is when I am doing work around the house, anyway, and that is followed by a shower. I have asked my wife and she has not noticed any foulness since I stopped.

21. Nothing "phobic" about it.
I happen to think Americans are far TOO conscious of such shit ... and the Japanese even more so. I've spent enough time in both France AND England (and elsewhere abroad) to have ANY 'phobias' regarding such trivial shit. Only an person IMMERSED in Americana would ASSUME that a mention of body odor was 'phobic.' That's nonsense.

I spent 6 years living in Germany and traveled around Europe and into Russia. My wife is German and her family doesn't have our same appreciation of toiletries. I have experienced the dizzying oxygen deprived vapors of an American mall and the nose hair turning funk of an East German night club.

So there... or something.

Yes I see that I missed your sarcasm or exasperation with the poster you were responding to.

22. Not according to the pathologist
Consultant pathologist Dr Andrew Hitchcock, who carried out the postmortem examination, said that he found no evidence of substance abuse.

He also found no evidence of any life-threatening diseases, alcohol or drugs in Daniel's body.

He said: "What we have in this case is someone who may well have had a cardiac abnormality in the presence of the solvent.

"There is a very reasonable assumption that the passive inhalation (of the solvent in the deodorant) almost certainly led to his death."

http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/DEODORANT-KILLS-BOY-12/article-487911-detail/article.html

And, as the Australian story also points out (as well as the local paper I've linked to), the boy used a lot of gels, and sprayed his clothing as well as his body.

32. and his parents are suffering from serious denial.. reminds me of...
Here in "the Southland", every time there's a gang shoot out, the families are interviewed on tv along with pictures of their departed (usually) son.. The guy's dressed in gang clothes, flashing signs (sometimes holding liquor), tattooed with gang tats, and yet Mom , Granny, or famliy friend always said the same stuff..

My cynical son (takes after me) would always say..

honor student?
getting his life together?
hardworking nice kid?
quiet, friendly boy?

Sometimes they would get all 4 in, but usually at least 2 of them made it on the air, when everyone watching knew that this kid was a gang-banger, and not that it made him deserve to be dead, but somewhere along the line, those "adults" must have "wondered" where all that new stuff came from...
