Judge says Guantanamo inmates must go free

A US federal judge has ordered the release of five Algerian detainees from Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.

The US government had accused all six men of planning to travel to Afghanistan to join al-Qaeda.

US District Judge Richard Leon said the US government has failed to prove anything against the prisoners, even after holding them nearly seven years in detention without charge.

He ruled the US military could not continue to hold the men as enemy combatants even if they believed the men would travel to Afghanistan to fight against US forces.
