My solution to the big 3 auto bailout: Make the oil companies do it!
Exxon/Mobil has had record profits for several years now, what was it, 14 billion last quarter? I'm sure that the others are enjoying large profits too. It is in the interest of the oil people to save Detroit and their gas guzzlers. Let them do it, we poor can't afford it.

1. Agree - only if the money comes from the Oil companies in the form of a windfall profits tax

3. Gonna be kind of hard to push hybrids and electric cars with the oil companies
calling the shots. ;)

Let the defense industry do the funding. At least they have an interest in keeping oil prices down, so they can fuel their tanks and jets more cheaply.

5. This is a good point...
But you can do it unwillingly by first creating a windfall profits tax (which Obama advocated in contrast to Hillary's gas tax holiday), and use those funds to balance a bailout in the budget. OTOH, I honestly don't think we will be seeing a significant windfall tax, if any. It seems to be an idea that has been all but forgotten about.

4. The oil companies are going to have to do something now
Maybe not a bailout, but they're sure not going to make much out of any future cars in this or any other country. They must be in shock just imagining all those millions of automobiles NOT BEING MADE!

6. I had also thought of that a while back. With their record profits...

THANKS TO THE AUTO INDUSTRY!!- there is no reason not to expect the oil companies to subsidize the auto industry. A windfall tax would be the best way to get the money to them.

Exxon/Mobil could do it all by themselves!!!

I think this is an idea that needs to catch on.

7. ABSOLUTE NATIONALIZATION...
...of ALL industry in this country is the only...ONLY!!...acceptable solution. Why should the oil companies be allowed to pick and choose THEIR profits simply by conspiring with Bush/Cheney/Opec/RNC to jack up the prices to pay for their gas guzzlers?

We need to ensure that the profiteers are forever kept away from any controls of any sort. If we get a filibuster-proof senate, there should be no reason why we can't nationalize ALL industries in this country. Now. No delay.

Once we take over the money, then WE...the PEOPLE...can dictate how such resources be used!

NO OTHER SOLUTION (other than banning the republican party) WILL SUFFICE.

10. That I could go for
They have the record profits and they have put pressure on the auto industry to keep gas mileage low all these years. The should bail out the auto industry simply because they will be directly effected if they fail.
