1. He actually speaks in complete, grammatically correct sentences.
He uses 2 and 3 syllable words! He has an IQ higher than his shoe size!

23. The neighbours think you Americans have made a WONDERFUL choice!
We Canadians are your nearest (along with Mexico) neighbours and we are overjoyed with your new president. I know, from all the polls that the rest of the civilized world feels the same way. It is a pleasure to listen to a person who is so intelligent, informed, sensible, calm....there just can't be enough praise for him.
For the first time in 8 years I won't be worrying that your president will be getting the world embroiled in another conflict somewhere. I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU AND FOR THE WORLD. GO OBAMA!

what I had hoped he was planning to do:
talk to the people about what he is doing and why he is doing it.

Coupled with the traits we are listing that kind of communication and care will provide him and us a wonderful experience after the darkness we just suffered.

God speed Obama !

37. It's one part of this election that hasn't sunk in for me yet.
Maybe I'm in some kind of cynical denial. I really didn't consider it happening in my lifetime.

When I voted I didn't seem to have the big emotional feeling I was expecting, like so many said that they had. It seems to be sinking in little by little.

66. Did you see the movie,
"Guess who's coming to dinner", with Sidney Portier?? They had it on TCM the other day. I love the lines where Sidney says to his father," Dad, you think of yourself as a black man, I think of myself as a man". This is so appropriate to the generations since the mid 60's. It will continue to get better and better as each new generation takes over. I have great hopes for my 2 yr.old grandson, who's Mommy is half black, his daddy is German/Irish, and his Grandma(me) is Scot/Irish and Native American. God gave this little boy golden CURLY hair, and blue eyes, and a permanent light tan!!! In other words, he's a "mutt" like his President!!!:fistbump:

72. I guess being 29 and only having seen pics, read books, and heard from my mother's lips
about the Civil Rights Movement, I don't have those memories of what it was like. I grew up with integrated schools, and was taught to never judge a book by its cover.. always look inside to see the person and if the person is of value. When I looked at our Dem. contenders this year, I didn't look at their colors or gender, I was looking at their policies... That's the novelty of the hard work, the marches, the beatings, the first of this and the first of that to integrate our society... The joy of NOT knowing that era by first hand accounts, but by history alone, is a tribute to all those who worked so many years ago. My eyes see the quality of the character and not the color of the skin...

39. My daughter said something today that surprised me.
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 09:00 PM by rebel with a cause
She had gone out with a friend and I called her to pick up the area paper, perhaps a Chicago one also, so we would make sure to get a copy of the thank you letter from Obama. She came home with two papers, the Chicago Tribune and the Southern Illinoisan. While I looked through the CT for the letter, I pulled out a section of Obama pictures. In the meantime, my daughter went through the SI to find an article that was not too flattering to Barack and then his letter. She read the letter to me from the SI and we looked at the pictures from the CT. With the papers spread out around us, she looked at me and said "I'm proud to be from Illinois. I know it sounds silly, but maybe for the first time I am proud of where I live."

I understood what she meant. I had brought her here from NYC when she was almost five years old. She was the only non-white child in her class then, and she met a lot of racism at that early age. Two other bi-racial children came years later and was in her age group, but that did not make life easier for her. Even though there were also good people here that were good to us, living in Southern Illinois became like a curse to her. But Obama changed all that for us, even though the majority of people here in the southern part of the state did not vote for him in this past election. His election allowed her to be proud of who she was and it allowed her to be proud of the state where she had spent most of her life time. It surprised me that she had found the pride she feels now, but I am very thrilled that she has. Only hope it lasts.

47. She had a hard time of it and my son had even a worse one.
I learned as they grew up what evil hatred other people were capable of, but it took college courses in race identity and racism to even come close to really understanding it.

My daughter told me one time when she was a teenager that I knew what it was like to face racism when I was with them, but when I went somewhere alone I was just another white person and did not have to deal with it. She of course was right.

I was just saying that to my husband -- how could you not like the Obamas after watching that? They seem like such nice, down-to-earth people. Grounded, is the word I would use. Reality-based. And smart.

We just have to hope that the hateful people on the right will put away their anger and let themselves be inspired rather than terrified. It's a major transition from the culture of fear we've been living in for so long, but if we can transcend this, anything is possible. I guess I'll always be an idealist, but I do believe in the ultimate goodness of the human race.

67. My favorite two moments of this wonderful inteview:
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 01:31 AM by riverdeep
The first was when Steve was talking about energy, and how now that the price of oil has gone back down, we have the option of putting it on the back burner, he said "this has been our pattern, we go from shock to trance", i.e. we get distracted easily. This is so true, and it's amazing to hear someone high up say it.

The second was a more informal thing. He said he doesn't tell his mother-in-law what to do, "I'm not stupid, that's why I got elected President, man". Brilliant.

71. I thought that was cute, and then he asked Kroft what his relationship was with his own
mother-in-law.. kind of put it on the interviewer... like duh, why am I asking this question.

I love the casual, closeness that the Obama's have.. Not that fake stepford shit.. not the "convenience".. it shows they are close, it show they talk a lot, it shows they respect and love one another mutually.. It's like normal people.. everyday people, really smart and accomplished people, but regular people.. Loved the story about the crappy apts and the car with a hole in the floor.. Just like my first car.. It cost me $300.00.

73. I just watched the personal transition part of the show
I am in awe of Michelle. Heck, both of them have their priorities completely in good alignment. Those kids are paramount in both of their minds. I really, really like that.

76. I just saw the clip.
I know just how you feel. This is a staggering, amazing change to what we've all become accustomed to. That feeling of it being almost unreal. Everyone in my town of Durham, NC is still buoyant from the election & it seems to have inspired personal courtesy at all levels of interaction.

77. It was a pleasure watching the 60 minutes interview of Obama last night.
There is no doubt in my mind I voted for the smartest MF in the room.
