Re Prop 8, a theory
How much of it was actual anti-gay sentiment, and how much was it a rebuke to San Francisco, widely viewed as the repository of All That Is Weird, and especially its self-aggrandizing mayor, Gavin Newsom, who's almost universally disliked outside his own city. Just a thought.

1. Well, the Yes on 8 ad with Newsom was very effective.
His saying "whether you like it or not" was too in-your-face for even me, and I thought the No on 8 campaign was really bad. That said, the issue will be back and hopefully with a better outcome.

2. that's kind of what I was getting at
the no side was its own worst enemy in letting the wrong people be out front on it.

3. Hey, don't kid yourself
Newsom's pretty disliked INSIDE his own city as well. ;)

Seriously though, I don't think it was a rebuke to SF.

5. I don't know...
I overheard a convo in a store the other day in rural but very, very blue mendocino county. prop 8 went down by magnificent numbers there. but still, the hateraters still linger. basically the jist of the conversation was that lots of straights cant get past the idea of two people of the same sex gettin it on. they picture two men or two women all dressed up in their wedding finery walking down the isle. the lady i overheard said it creeped her out. I suspect this wasn't a religious thing with her. it was just creepy to her. clearly she didn't understand at all what the amendment was about.

the challenge, it appears to me, is to replace whatever it is they fear, with the idea of equality. nothing more, nothing less.

6. That's a really strange theory
I don't think people voted no on prop 8 to spite San Francisco and Gavin Newsom.

That's silly.

7. not that everybody did
just enough to make a difference. What got me thinking was that some other "progressive" initiatives passed, so some people who voted for them also voted for prop 8. I was just trying to come up with a reason why.
