Hypo-Allergenic DOGS? Some Breeds Are? Explain
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 07:16 PM by Wiley50
None of mine have ever been hypo-allergenic, esp. after

they roll in the road kill out in front of the house.

And they Lick their _____. You know. They all do it.

Every dog I've ever known was nasty as all get out.

((except for maybe some Manhattan Yorkies and such)

That's why they are considered unclean in many cultures.

1. Hypo allergenic doesn't mean it doesnt like its own ass
It means it's dander is less of an allergen than the average, and thus easier on folks who have allergies caused by that.

2. Some breeds, like Poodles and Schnauzers do not
shed, hence they are know to be better animals for people prone to allergies.

3. there's no such thing
the best that can be managed is non-shedding - poodles, some terriers like wheatens, bichons.

but dog saliva actually has some antibiotic properties. as opposed to cats.

4. Here is a site that a gives an excellent explanation

The poodle coat, and the coats of other breeds frequently recommended to the allergic, have another quality beyond the long growth period. These coats tend to be both tightly curled, and usually lacking in undercoat. This combination tends to keep dead hair from detaching and floating in the air, and it tends to retain the dander, which is the most common source of allergens. Typically in these curly coated breeds the dead hair must be manually removed by grooming or it will stay tangled in the coat causing matting.

5. Some dogs, like schnauzers for instance, grow hair rather than fur.

No creatures are unclean however. That's human invented concept.

6. Poodles are supposedly good dogs for people with allergies
My friend whose daughter couldn't go into any house with dogs or cats without medicating for allergies, was fine with the poodle. It has rooted "hair" rather than fur with the undercoats and shedding etc.

My beagle sheds BUCKETS! But I love her!

7. Poodles actually do shed, but it stays in their curly hair and not on furniture or the floors
Which is why they need so much maintenance. They need to be brushed and because their hair never stops growing they need to be groomed often. And they are one of the most intelligent dogs and believe it or not they're hunting dogs. They love the water too.

I have a toy poodle and I've never seen a hair on anything. But when I brush her it comes out and it's amazing how much there is.

Has several dogs. ALL hunting dogs. He's french.

His standard poodle is his favorite, he's an excellent hunter, and the most intelligent of the many dogs wandering around his house! Max is the best!

22. The (standard) poodle was bred to be a water retriever ... and very good at it.
Smart, high endurance, strong, and with a coat that protects them from the wet and cold.

Voila! Wild Duck ala Orange!

8. Dogs that are hypo-allergenic
have hair rather than fur, thus the dander created isn't the same as from fur.

10. Don't know about hypo-allergenic but,
I've had 3 Yorkshire Terriers over the last 26 years and not one of them licked their u know... very much. Once in a blue moon. And I'd know because Yorkies are needy little bastids and are always at my side. They don't shed and they're wonderful companions.

Three males neutered at 6 months ditto for spaying the 1 female.

14. Yorkies are needy and wonderful companions. I have two and a yorkie mix.
My female yorkie suffers horribly from allergies, she scratches constantly, scratching off her hair. She eats Natural Balance allergy free sweet potato and fish formula and 100% chicken jerky snacks. I bathe her, using an Oatmeal based shampoo, once a week. And still she scratches herself, until she raises "hot spots" on her little body. :-( She weighs in at 6.9 lbs. She is tiny.

30. Your yorkie gif pic looks like
my 3rd baby, Max. He died last year of kidney failure  he was only 5 years old. My new baby Maxx (didn't want to give up the name) will be a year old in Feb. Whataguy!!

Max suffered the same type of skin problem your baby has. Luckily ONE worked good with him. He stopped scratching. The first vet wanted me to enroll him in a program with a dog shrink.
Max was really bad with the scratching and chewing at his skin until it bled.

Maxx here weighs 5 lbs. and is a very sturdy little bugger!! to you and your furbabies.

16. No shedding, (no undercoat) no dander. Maltese is one. Doesn't smell like a dog.
Mine is 8 yrs old and he is hypoallergenic. Has no negative affect on the allergic. That's all I know.

17. there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.
Not only do they shed hair but they shed dead skin cells into the air and on the floor. There is no way that all the hair and dead skin will stay on the dog. Besides, if I pet a dog, or he licks my arm, then my hand will start itching and I have to go wash it.

I have bad allergies to dogs, cats and wool (sheep hair) and lanolin (wool oil).

Hell, I've had a dog lick my arm and I instantly broke out in a rash.

I love dogs but I can't have any. :eyes:

25. Have you ever owned a Maltese for 8 yrs and lived with a highly allergic
person at the same time?

Sorry about your personal situation but it's kind of presumptuous of you to disagree with others who have this experience. Do you breed animals? Have a zoology degree or something? Know any breeders of hypoallergenic dogs?

29. I had a adorable Maltese and I had allergies all the time but then
I was always allergic to the moon the stars, medicines of every kind and on and on.

I was reminded that even if the dogs hair was OK, when the dog goes outside and rolls in the grass and comes in -- that's it. Out come my tissues and Meds.

But, my little Muffy was clearly worth every sneeze.

18. Poodles - of all sizes - have hair rather than fur, so they don't shed.
Same for some other dogs.

My standard poodle doesn't shed a visible hair in the house, though right after a bath you can rub some off.
