If marriage is so fucking sacred...BAN DIVORCE
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 02:11 PM by and-justice-for-all
so much so that I can not marry my lover of 14 years; Then they should ban divorce.

Go ahead and not allow me to marry, but they need to show just how dedicated they are to the sanctity of marriage by banning divorce too.

1. Some countries do...
But--to my knowledge--they don't allow gay marriage, either.

If it helps, I hope Prop 8 is overturned by the Calif. Supreme Court.

B-)

3. And if it's primarily meant for procreation
Then they should tax or imprison all who gain the benefits of marriage without procreating, those free-loaders!

result of being stoned, not the cause of it.

8. This is the same hypocrisy of the Republican party on their economic policies
They want to tell other people what they can't do but when it comes to them they want all options on the table. The Mormon church financed Prop h8 heavily saying they wanted to 'protect marriage' yet in Mormon culture they encourage you to get married to multiple teenage girls... real sacred.

11. several things.
1. first of all, we all know the objection to gay marriage is not based on logic, legal or otherwise.
2. banning divorce as a reaction to number 1 would be proposing a proportional and logical counter, which means you accept their false argument that there is a logical or legal reason for their position.

you can only counter bigotry with exposure. You can't counter it with threats to their status quo. they're already terrified, no?

I agree something should be done, but I question whether this is the right "something".

31. oh, sorry, not trying to rain on your parade
just saying that they are operating on irrational fear of a perceived threat, and if you make that irrational threat real to them, you only reinforce their original position.

I know that's not what you're really suggesting, but that is how they would view it.

12. Some of the wingnut-o-sphere does want to ban no-fault divorce.
These people aren't planning to stop with gay marriage. They want the whole taliban-special enchilada. No contraception, no abortion, no divorce, state sponsored patriarchy, etc.

I think the tide of history is against them, but they won't go down without a fight.

13. The last clown that tried to talk about the "sanctity of marriage" to me
Got shut up real quick when I asked him "Just what part of 'until death do us part' did you forget?"
since I knew that 1. he's been married and divorced 3 times-the last time to a titbar dancer. 2. He's a failed Pentecostal minister. and 3. I mentioned that my heterosexual marriage was in no way threatened by allowing gays and lesbians to marry.

As much as I disagree with the Catholics on most things, at least they pretend harder to honor marriage.

Carry on. Forgive me for being so trite.

37. Louisiana once considered moving in that direction
the fundiebots were pushing something called "covenant marriage", which would have been a lot harder to undo than traditional marriage. (See how much they mind messing with "traditional marriage" when it suits them? :eyes: ) Regular marriage would have remained an option, but the concern was that one partner would say, "But if you really loved me, you'd choose the covenant marriage...". :scared:
