Gay Marriage is an EQUAL RIGHTS issue.
I fail to understand why anyone who considers themselves liberal or progressive would not vote in favor of it. Whether you LIKE gay marriage being legal or not is a personal issue. Equal Rights for all is a legal issue. When you vote against it, or speak out against it, or make fun of it, or dismiss it as being unimportant, then you are not advocating equal rights. Many of us seem to be advocating 'separate but equal'. This is bullshit! Separate is NOT EQUAL! Civil union is NOT equal!
So please think about it. DO you believe all of us, as American citizens, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Old, Young, Christian, Jew, Buddist, Bahai, Catholic, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic, Straight, Gay, Democrats, Republicans(ugh)or any other group should have equal rights? Or do we still want to pick which groups should get them? To pick & choose which groups is decidedly NOT progressive or liberal.
Please think about it.

In my view, marriage can be seen as a symbol both of
equality and the pursuit of happiness if that is what happiness
means to that person.

--- We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men (meaning
all humans) are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are
life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. --

Thus, the courts should declare Prop 8 null and void and uphold
the intent of the founders and the California constitution.

And sorry, but 95% of DUers in a recent poll here, voted their support for gay marriage. Not for civil unions, for marriage.

Some of us see civil unions as a stepping stone to marriage and believe that although it's not equal, it's better than nothing. And in some places, it's possible to get civil unions enacted and not marriage. Doesn't mean you give up on marriage, but are you actually suggesting that civil unions should be stripped from people because it's not marriage? No, of course, you're not. So please think when you're indignantly trashing civil unions. You're not doing anyone any favors when you do.

I am not advocating taking anything away from anyone. I do apologize for that. I don't mean to trash civil unions because yes, they are indeed a stepping stone to marriage rights. I simply believe that we should all have equality. TOTAL equality.

9. The way I see it::
Marriage
Civil Unions
Religious Ceremonies (with the consent of the church involved)
Living Together Contracts
Whatever

The above must be open to all couples regardless of the sexual orientation of the parties.

Seems simple to me...and I sure as hell only see religion and churches involved when ANY couple seeks to have them bless their specific union.

IMO, this above is what the First Amendment of the US Constitution intended.

Why is this soooooooooo difficult? :shrug:
