Lots of same-sex couples featured on HGTV - AWESOME
We watch Home & Garden TV often.

Lately, we've noticed that they show a lot of same-sex couples. Today House Detective showed a male same-sex couple, another show featuring a female same-sex couple, and just now showing a male same-sex couple from Oklahoma.

Anyone else noticed it?

This is absolutely great. These HGTV shows are seen by many people.

2. Some major home magazines are featuring the same trend
of tolerance.

I have noticed, though, that some of the articles are written so that it MIGHT be inferred that they're friends, or brothers or sisters. This is done by not mentioning last names like they do with hetero couples.

But, it's a start...

3. Yes, I noticed that they rareley specifically mention them as a "couple"
and I have not yet seen any of them holding hands or any other affectionate body language as you often see in hetero couples.

But, as you said "it's a start"

It shows "regular" couples to a wide audience.

16. I've heard the couples introduced as partners several times
And, to be fair, the hetero couples aren't really shown holding hands or anything like that. If it is shown, it's minimized.

I love HGTV. It's very progressive, IMO.

4. HGTV's HQ is in my hometown and a good friend works for
that company. Many of the creative staff ARE GLBT which is why they feature people they know.

BTW, HGTV is located in Knoxville, TN - the South. :)

5. I see it all the time.
I guess we're OK as long as we stay in our home decorating and landscaping and hair styling arenas. !! Just a little wry humor there.

12. Reality Television has a fairly good track record.
Amazing Race has two gay couples on this season.

20. I've never watched Amazing Race.
We don't watch a lot of reality TV. It is great that they are that inclusive.

21. This is their All Star series - so these are couples brought back from earlier episodes.
The two gay couples are VERY out and very much partners in a way that is great to see on network TV.

22. I guess I'll never get on TV replacing the master cylinder in my pickup truck
or machining a high-speed spindle out in the shop...or flying a jet plane.

7. More than exist in the actual population?
If so, then presumably it's a targeted-who-watches-this-show-demographic decision, no?

14. I just noticed the same in DWELL Magazine
People are actually referred to as (gasp) partner, and they're even sitting close to each other on the couch. The horror!

18. I've noticed that, too
On "House Hunters", which is either on DIY or HGTV (they're owned by the same people, so it's all the same thing) they often feature same-sex couples. Very cool.

19. I have noticed that.
What I like most about that is that they portray the couples just like they do hetero couples, which makes it seem completely normal and ok. They don't emphasize it at all, it's just like, "oh yeah, these two guys are buying a vacation house" or whatever. I wish all TV was like that, instead of vilifying gays or making a huge comedic deal out of homosexuality.

I love HGTV, and am totally addicted to some of their shows.

24. And it's never done in a "shocking" way.
I.E., if you watch a reality show on one of the major channels, they'll always intone, "How does this Christian family deal with this GAY couple?" or something along those lines.

But on the HGTV-type shows, it's always something like, "Jim and Bob want to redecorate their house," or something simply stated like that.
