Virgil Goode Is Gone
Blogging at Perriello Victory Rally

"Tom Tom Tom!" chants by huge crowd at the Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville VA right across the street from Virgil Goode's office, where we have so often marched, protested, and sat-in, but never been represented. Perriello is talking "change" and "a new kind of politics," and the applause is ecstatic. People are commenting to each other about how long they've been losing. They're still scared to believe they've won something. Perriello is talking "unity." Huge applause. Very brief remarks. Now he's doing more interviews. I'm not sure he'll be a progressive leader. I am sure that the worst member of the United States Congress must now seek other employment.

He's been too damned long in going.
I should come down and party on the Mall
but I'm too far into the sake' to drive.

Thanks for all you've done.
You're a C-villian TJ would be proud of.

4. Virgil Goode lost?
Sweet. I'm sure it's tearing him up that there's still a Muslim in congress, and one has just been elected president. ;)

11. Tom Perriello Won? Tom Perriello Won! Tom Perriello Won!!!
This is the guy I sent my basically token donation to (I'm more than broke this year). I read about all the races considered contested, and Perriello is the one person that struck me as truly progressive. I trust his instincts like I trust Maurice Hinchey and Kucinich. He was even recommended by "J Street", an organization advocating Israeli/Palestinian peace and aimed at progressive U.S. Jews. I am relieved by the Obama victory, but delighted by Perriello's. He was written off on Daily Kos. You folks showed them. Wah-hoo!! (For the first time I'm going to use that slightly silly bouncing smilie.) :bounce: and this one: :woohoo: and this  and this :applause:

BTW--going by his background, I don't think you have to worry about his progressive credentials. I think he'll speak softly (his district isn't flaming liberal as you know) and carry a big stick. So more congratulations, and get some rest. When you wake up, you might want to hook him up with the staff of Hinchey for education on how to be progressive in an apolitical district--how to get the constituency to understand that he's voting the way he will for their benefit. He also needs to stay tight with any large unions in his district. They will make it easier for him to vote his conscience. He does not need to transform into an Warner clone.
