Why are they closing the schools in TN.?

I just got off the phone with my Mom, who lives in Tennessee, and she told me that they were closing the schools tomorrow.

I don't remember her ever saying the the schools were closed on election days before, and she herself cannot remember. (They used to have polling booths in schools when I was kid, but they never closed the schools as a result)

Anybody from the Volunteer state have any info on this?

7. In NYC the schools are always closed on Election day...If for no other reason, but that it is

usually the schools that are used for polling places.

Personally, I wish voting day was a holiday to ensure that everyone has a chance to vote.

11. Back before mail-in voting in Oregon, my kids' school was closed

on election day because it was a major polling place, and all the parking space and gymnasium facilities were needed for voting.

because they were expecting big crowds and thought it was better to not have all the kids around. It's a safety thing, traffic, parking, little kids, etc. At my son's school, there are hardly any parking spots on a regular day; it's a madhouse on election day, especially at drop-off and pick-up times.

Some schools in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Louisiana, and Ohio are closing. But I don't see anything about TN.

19. My daughter's school is closed tomorrow too

they say it's for teachers to fill out report cards, but there are a few weeks before conferences. I think it's because the school is going to have too many voters there and it'll be too much of a disruption for the students. They could be worried about security too - security at schools is a big deal and with tons and tons of extra people coming into the school that day, they might have decided to close them because they can't provide the students with a high enough level of security.

My son goes to city schools and his is open. We also have a county school district and they are closed for the elections. A lot of polling stations are at schools.

Especially for presidential elections. Parking is a problem at many schools and there is worry about congestion and such in the parking lots. Don't want little kids run down by excited voters.

Recently there has been concern security concerns, especially in the "post 9/11 world" that the paranoid speak about. Seems some think election day is the perfect time for terrorists, perverts, and sickos to infiltrate our schools. So better safe than sorry, the schools close.

They use some schools as polling stations. I have no idea if this is a state-wide policy, but we've lived here for 5 years and it's always this way, even for the primaries.

I always take my kids to vote with me, right in the booth. My mom always took me with her, too.

I think Election day should be a national holiday. In the past I've taken my child out of school on election day so he could work the polls with me. I'm probably one of the few who are happy about this.
