Four years after the invasion of Iraq, stability on the ground continues to be more elusive than ever. Just this week, the Pentagon called Iraq a civil war for the first time, acknowledging US-led attempts at political reconciliation have failed. Iraqi citizens and U.S. soldiers have witnessed some of the deadliest days of the war. Nonetheless, the right-wing establishment stubbornly maintains that the American public is steadfast in their desire to stay involved in the war.
“President Bush may still believe the war in Iraq was the right thing to do and that, all in all, it has been worthwhile effort. The public, however, begs to differ,” states Ruy Teixeira of the Center for American Progress. Teixeira tracked polls on public support for the war since March 2003 on two key questions: 1) whether going to war was a mistake, and 2) whether the war has been worth fighting.
