2. He's also one of the most vindictive people you'll ever meet
Tom Davis keeps track of every person in public office in Virginia who ever went against him, or supported his opponents. He is one underhanded SOB.

Andrew Hurst, a good man, was Tom's opponent this past election cycle. Davis overwhelmed Andy in the fundraising department, but he didn't win in a landslide.

Tom Davis can be beaten.

3. Nobody "owns" their seat anymore.
Witness the Second Congressional District of NH...Charlie Bass, presumed in for life, booted. It can be done.

7. I think whoever goes against him, should keep clips of his c-span hearings
and floor speeches and use it against him. I know I wouldn't buy even a certified used car from this man (and I use the word man, loosely).

9. His opponents are probably downloading those video clips and taking notes
even as I'm typing this, LOL!

Tom Davis is an obnoxious, vindictive, egotistical SOB. The only person worse than he is is his second wife, Jeannemarie.

13. the key for his opponents will be raising money
Davis's district is in the DC television market. Ad time is very expensive. These clips are great, but getting them out to voters is tough to do.

14. It is so self-evident when watching him at "work" and I bet most of his
constituency have not seen this side of him. If they have and voted for him anyway, I know that is one CD I wouldn't want to live in!
My previous Congresswoman was a Bushbot but always very careful about how she cheerleaded the agenda of this sociopath administration. Even then, she was defeated by my Ideal candidate! It was a close race because she tried to use fear of Progressive Liberals. It didn't work!

5. He may run for Senate if Warner retires
Although, with noise about Allen making a new run, maybe not. Davis has an interesting history. Historically, he drew a lot of crossover support from Democrats in his district because (1) he is very good at constituent service, which includes sticking up for federal employees against the usual right wing attacks on "bureaucrats" and (2) he has taken relatively moderate (for a repub) positions on a number of issues. His pushing for voting rights for DC is another example of something he has done that has been regarded as more moderate than the average repub. He built his reputation by being a little of this, and a little of that. The Gun Owners of America, for example, rate him as voting against their position slightly more often than he votes with their position.

When he became a member of the repub leadership, and as he began formulating a plan for pursuing state wide office, he turned more to the right and his cross over support has dropped significantly.

He captured 83 percent of the district in 2002, but dropped to 60 percent in 2004 and only got 55% in 2006. Its going to be tough to take him out, nonetheless, because he is well known in the community. He is the consummate "local" politician. He shows up at community meetings, local holiday events and parades. He hands out paper fans and bottled water with his name on them; I've even seen him reach in his pocket and pull out a bag of dog biscuits to offer a treat to someone's dog at a 4th of July parade.

If he decides to get out of the House and make a run for statewide office, the betting is that his wife, who is a state legislator, will try to succeed him. The Democrats have two possible candidates for the seat, imo. One is Andy Hurst, the political novice who surprised a lot of people by capturing 44% of the vote in 2006 running on a largely antiwar-oriented platform. And Gerry Connally, the county supervisor, has a fair degree of name recognition and an established political organization. His campaign would focus on the local service issues (rather than national) that seem to play well in the 11th District.

6. His wife?
I'm so sick of these families that just think they are entitled to run government.

10. well, she was a state legislator before they were married
So its not quite the same as some situations.

I wouldn't be voting for her if she wasn't his wife, so it really seems irrelvant to me.

12. She wouldn't be a State Senator if it hadn't been for Tom and his donors
In fact, she wouldn't be in the Virginia Legislature at all if it hadn't been for him.

11. sort of
Although Charlie's margins of victory in previous elections were closer than Davis' have been. Also, Davis' district has historically elected repubs more often than Democrats. Again, its a district that tends to care more about constituent service than national policies. I think that is changing, but its an obstacle to defeating Davis.
