Race Rating Change: Dole in Jeopardy of Losing Senate Seat
By Marie Horrigan, CQ Staff
First-term GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina was struggling in her competitive race against Democratic state Sen. Kay Hagan even before Dole launched attack ads this week that were decried by numerous state newspapers as offensive and misleading.
Because of the ads and Dole’s declining poll numbers, CQ Politics is changing its rating on the race to Leans Democratic from No Clear Favorite.
A survey released Friday by Elon University indicated Hagan led Dole 44 percent to 37 percent while a CNN/Time poll had Hagan up 53 percent to 44 percent for Dole.
Despite Dole’s declining poll numbers — or perhaps because of them — on Wednesday the Dole campaign placed an ad about a “secret fundraiser” for Hagan.
The Hagan campaign says the fundraiser in question was hosted by Sen. John Kerry and the Secure Our Senate Majority PAC, and was held at the Boston, Mass. home of two members of a political action committee called Godless Americans PAC. According to the political action committee’s Web site, it endorses political candidates who support the First Amendment separation of church and state.
