Tape of Kennedy's Killing Is Getting Digital Analysis
By MICHAEL JANOFSKY

About a year from now, one of the most vexing mysteries in American history may finally be solved: Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone?

Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have begun work on a digital scanning apparatus that they believe will be able to reproduce sound from the only known audio recording of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas.

(Using digital scanning technology, a famous Dictabelt was to be analyzed.)

''People want to know,'' said Gary Mack, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which opened in the book depository building in 1989. ''The Warren Commission said it was one guy. The House Committee said it was Oswald and someone else. There hasn't been any resolution.''

Mr. Waffen said it was about time to get one.

''Scientists have studied these sounds for 25 or 30 years and have still reached different conclusions,'' he said. ''But with today's technology, we can get a better reading and answer the question, one way or the other.''

Yes, we DO WANT TO KNOW.

This was four years ago.

Why have the conclusions never been brought out?

Has anybody heard about this one way or another?

1. Speaking of JFK,
I remember years ago hearing that 50 years after the death of either JFK or Jackie O that things would be unsealed. I don't know what it is, where it is or what it is about but I just remember hearing that timeline. Is there any truth to that?

3. I heard that too. I think that it's entirely possible that the head shot
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 05:26 PM by mistertrickster
was the result of an accidental discharge of a rifle carried by the Secret Service in the follow car.

That would explain why people in the area thought they smelled smoke and why it's been covered up all these years.

ON EDIT--

It would also explain why the two other films of the assassination were seized and tampered with by the government.

4. At the time of her death, I read in the newspaper that Jackie O had...
...recorded a videotape where she discusses her point of view on the Kennedy Assassination, among other things. While other topics are touched on, the bulk of the recording involved her talking about the assassination of her husband. From what I recall, the video tape was in the custody of her lawyers who were under orders to release it something like 25 years after her death. I think this may have been from a Newsweek a gillian years ago.

The only other thing I remember from the article is that she appears to be drinking in it. Not heavily or anything, but it was noted and described to the reporter. The contents of her opinions were not shared with the reporter from the source.

5. The only thing I remember is that Jackie
wrote some sort of memoir about the assassination that was supposed to be sealed until 50 years after the death of her last surviving child.

2. I'm going with the government coup theory
I think the military and LBJ conspired to remove a sitting US president and take over because they were pissed about the cuban missile crisis.

of 2004 didn't pan out. They leaked CYA stories knowing the first truly open government Democratic president would open the books of at least 4 decades of coverups.

Educational Forum- Scroll down to Chris Scally's message. Now, normally I wouldn't know this particular forum from Adam but having randomly researched JFK's assassination among many, many other subjects, I have occasionally wound up on Education Forum.

Despite the topic, the people involved are all education professionals who take thier research (whether related to the JFK assassination or any of the other varied topics on the fora there), though it is only their hobby, quite seriously.

Duke:

Carl Haber at Berkeley has recently received the necessary grant funding to continue with the project.

They have only tried so far to carry out a test scan on a non-DPD dictabelt. In its present configuration, the probe equipment needs some additional software to handle the belts properly, and the software was due to be produced, I believe, during the summer months. At present, I understand that NARA are waiting until Haber and his people perfect a working proto-type that handles belts correctly, and then they will finally decide what to do about belt #10.

9. The Education Forum is a very good place
There are quite a number of professional researchers on that forum. Nevertheless it is reasonably troll free because it is a semi-closed forum. It's operated by John Simkin who is also the owner of http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/

11. Holy Crimanetly! They're still working on this?
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 11:57 PM by mistertrickster
Well . . . I guess that explains why they got nothing.

On edit--it would've been kinda nice if the press hadn't breathlessly reported that it would be finalized "next year" . . . in 2004.

AND I hope they've at least scanned it and digitized it before it breaks down any further. They can always write the software later.
