My 15 y/o may fail Civics....lol
They had to do their own mock presidential campaign...saying why the voters should choose them, what they have to offer, etc.

She did an elaborate spread of campaign material, good visuals and good copy, but the basic message was satire, ripped off from Republicans this election cycle, with headlines such as:

YOU'RE NOT AN AMERICAN IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR ME!

YOU'RE A COMMUNIST IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR ME!

IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR ME, YOU'RE AN ATHEIST!

YOU'RE A TERRORIST IF YOU VOTE FOR THE OTHER GUY!

VOTE FOR ME AND YOU'LL BE SAFE DURING THE RAPTURE, YOU BETCHA!

IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR ME, YOU HATE THE TROOPS!

And so on, and so on.

7. civics? there are still schools that offere civics?
is it a state requirement where you are?

it used to be required pretty much EVERYWHERE- but now fewer and fewer schools are even offering it.

and THAT has to change.

12. I was DELIGHTED to see Civics was offered. And, yes, in her school...
(public school) it's a requirement. I'm not sure if it is a statewide requirement or not; honestly, I doubt it.

It should be a requirement everywhere. I completely agree. So much needs to change. :)

9. More to the story: We're in a "McPalin" area.....ughhhhhh............
so the teacher may or may not have a sense of humor about it.

But there was a kid in her class telling the kids Obama hangs out with terrorists -- "One named Ayers but he changed it from a muslim name" (! :wow: - their lies get more and more extreme and ridiculous) -- so, his extreme ignorance triggered her campaign theme.

I offered to type up a cheat sheet of sorts for loser dude and other thumpers around here, entitled "Dumbassology: An Idiot-Proof Guide for McPalin Supporters."

My daughter thought that might be a little much. :hippie:

15. I liked to do stuff like that as a student as well.
We turned an entire presentation on an academic work on smut into a Phil Donahue show complete with Bob Guccione, a conservative minister and other assorted characters and worked the entire topic into the presentation.

Got an A.

21. Excellent. I am sure you are rightly proud of her.
She clearly understands exactly what John McCain's campaign is all about. I'd give her an "A."

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.

22. Oh, it gets better!!!
(In a way, I'm hesitant about her engaging in these interactions, as it's honestly getting scary out there; it's one thing for me to do it, but I am protective of her. On the other hand, I want her to stand up for herself and what she feels is right and just.)

I just picked her up from school. Again, there are a ton of fundie types in her school and all around us. It is from these people that I learned Catholics "aren't Christian."

One of the fundies in her Civics class said to her, "You liberals are all alike."

My daughter flashed on the one sign I recently put on my car and replied, calmly, "Jesus was a liberal. It's really NOT a bad word. You should read a little more about it."

When the same kid later chimed in with a line about Obama using racism for his campaign, she was able to respond with what she learned in our little chat last night about the B Girl.

She said, "You want to talk racism? Let me tell you about some dangerous race baiting..."

And she proceeded to school them on the Ashley Todd incident and told them to "make Google and Snopes your friend" when they get home.

:applause:
