David Sirota: Conservatives Pretend Election Isn't Referendum On Conservatism
from OurFuture.org:

Conservatives, Despite Their Own Message, Pretend Election Isn't Referendum On Conservatism
By David Sirota

October 27th, 2008 - 9:36am ET

The Village freakout continues, this time in the form of Peter Wehner's op-ed in the Washington Post today. With most Republican candidates explicitly running on a platform promising a revival of Reagan conservatism and berating the supposed "socialism" of Democrats, this former Bush hack writes that "it is a mistake to assume that significant GOP losses, should they occur, are a referendum on conservatism."

It's hard to overstate how absurd this is. Let me repeat: In the stretch run of this campaign, the Republican Party has decided to make this an ideological contest between Reagan conservatism and supposed wild-eyed liberalism/socialism - and now, sensing a potentially huge loss, conservatives are now arguing that despite their decision to make this an ideological contest, "an Obama victory would be a partisan, rather than an ideological, win."

Obviously, the Right understands what's really going on in America - and is working to reinterpret that reality.

Having doubled-down on Reaganism, they know that a loss under these circumstances would be not just a momentary electoral set back, but a huge repudiation of conservative ideology, and a huge mandate for progressivism. And so conservatives are already trying to revise history to pretend these last few months of the campaign never happened. ......(more)

1. Too Bad Most Democrats Don't See It That Way

Listen to Rahm and company and you'd think it's about a more *effective* Reaganism.

3. If it were ever "conservative" in any sense at all
it might have had a chance. Instead: they chose to cloak theft, scandal, dirty tricks, war profiteering, international intrigues and machinations; the usurpation and corruption of the CIA and much of the intelligence community for perpetration of international crime (thanks, Papi Bush and Ronnie Raygun); the strip-mining of the middle-class; the shipment of our jobs and technology overseas along with a huge amount of our money to Bahamian, Cayman Island, Swiss, and Dubaian secret bank accounts -- where we'll see neither again; the malicious neglect of our electrical, water, and sewer infrastructures; the clear-cutting of national treasures, our national forests for the profit of the few (Those belong to all of us; where's my share of the profit? You didn't get yours either, didja!); the fouling of our lakes, rivers, and streams because Republicans don't care if they shit in their own livingrooms -- all of this went masquerading as "conservatism".

It's not. The emperor is nekkid. It's plain-old theft, corruption, criminality, and nasty living. Now, if republicans want to live nasty, they can do so in their own homes, it's none of my business. But when they want to live nasty in the streets, or live nasty in the public areas, they need to be housebroken like any other nasty creature. It's time to put the leash back on them.

The intelligence community has been rendered corrupt and useless. There are illegal black sites all over the world. The intelligence our officials should have gotten to prevent 9/11 was already watered down, half-wrong, and even that got ignored by the REPUBLICAN officials in charge. "Conservatism" as a phrase, as a concept, even in practice is totally bankrupt, totally without meaning, used up, washed out, and its cover is blown. Anyone these days who says "I'm a conservative", well, you know they're admitting to being either a crook, a bigot, an out-and-out racist, a liar, or some combination thereof.

What they aren't is conservative by any dictionary definition.

A real conservative would have conserved the country's natural resources for future generations, so we'd have clean air, clean water, and places of refuge. A real conservative wouldn't have stolen the forests, taken down mountains, taken mineral resources that belonged to the American taxpayer, shit in the rivers, taken the profit for the already-rich and left the bill for those who got nothing but the shaft out of the deal in the first place.

That's not a conservative -- that's a goddam crook.

A real conservative would rather have died than to give up his or her rights by agreeing to an atrocity like the Patriot Act. A real conservative wouldn't have given such a lying name to a piece of legislation so in conflict with the principle of the Founding Document. A real conservative would never have agreed to have an ever-larger government peek in his emails, his phone records, his bank records, and every time he wipes his arse. Yet these so-called "conservatives" think the Patriot Act is the greatest thing since sliced bread since they swallowed the hook that it "protects us".

That's not a conservative -- that's a goddam yellow coward.

A real conservative would mind his own business. Good fences make good neighbors and the government should stay on its side of it. Not these so-called "conservatives". They want government to regulate just what kind of sex people should have and with whom. If that ain't intrusion, I've never heard of it. More to the point, they're so fixated on sex -- the kind of sex other people are supposedly having -- they're forgetting about love and what that means. And they've got zero notion of what "mind your own damn business" means, or "small government". They want government all-up in everything, if it means legislating morality. They conveniently forget about all the theft, graft, corruption, depravity, war crimes, treaty-breaking, torture, and a million other things Jesus would never, ever, ever, in a million years have countenanced -- all done in their name. Just please don't let two guys get married and they're just fine with torture and killing of innocent children.

That's not a conservative -- that's a goddam hypocrite.

No, these days, "conservative" has come to mean the very poster-image of a person who will trespass into your back yard to steal the sheets off your line and the wood off your shed to go burn a cross on someone's yard they don't know and beat them with a Bible they don't read.

The word should die the death it deserves and let's start calling these cowards, hypocrites, racists, bigots, sloths, and dregs of society exactly what they are and have been. They have engineered the greatest theft and blight our nation has ever seen. The decades-long destruction of our land, our pride, our treasury, our infrastructure, our system of laws, even our language is coming to a screeching halt.
