Bush's Dilemma: Removal Was ILLEGAL Without His OK
by Mary2002
Fri Mar 16, 2007 at 03:42:27 PM PDT

Bush has an interesting choice over the next few days. The WH spin on the firing of the USAttys has been to put out two completely contradictory concepts and hope that no one notices. This is a pretty safe bet with the MSM, but no so much with the lawyers sitting on Leahy's Judiciary committee. Those lawyers are going to see very quickly that Bush will have to fish or cut bait. The President must confess to a role in the removal of the lawyers, or the removals are prima facie illegal.

Mary2002's diary :: ::
What are the two contradictory statements that the WH is selling at the same time? Well, on the one hand, WH spokespersons like Dana Perino and Tony Snow are saying:

President Bush made "no recommendations on specific individuals," Snow said. "We don't have anything to indicate the president made any calls on specific us attorneys."

On Monday, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino acknowledged that complaints about the job performance of prosecutors occasionally came to the White House and were passed on to the Justice Department, perhaps including some informally from Bush to Gonzales.

That the the White House's memory about the whole affair was "hazy." Like Houston's air, I guess.

28. You are correct as long as it wasn't gratis or for other favors there
initially is nothing wrong. But here's the kicker..the religious right is not going to like it one tiny bit. And if they get upset I wonder where the support for them is going to go....out the window maybe.

10. Bush has said, over and over again...
That USA's serve at the "pleasure of the President." Yet, he claims he had no input on the attorneys being fired. Which is it? He can't have it both ways.

17. agree
I think the closing scene of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is how this will end

they'll circle the wagons, declare martial law, whatever, and finally bring about not just a SCOTUS battle but a national emergency of historic proportions. an event for the history books. I don't know exactly what, but there will be a real honest-to-gosh showdown. Not like the shelling of the Russian White House, but something big.

Just keep thinking of Michael Gross in TremorsII. This is going to be Big. Really Big. Really Really big.

27. I still wonder sometimes if this bunch is insane enough
for something like that to happen. Are they as power-mad as we think? Or, faced with the inevitable, will they slink off with some quiet promise of immunity from prosecution.

29. I think there is a chance that various individuals
will want to "live to fight another day" so will start jumping ship when it gets hotter. So it might fall apart before they "take a stand". But I think that is DEFINITELY in their plans. Plan B. They don't admit to having a Plan B for the war, but you can bet they have one for their takeover. Just as they had a plan in case Gore won the Electoral vote but not the popular.

Only thing is, since Baker & Co. have been ditched, the "brain trust" executing this thing appears to be turning into 'the gang that couldn't shoot straight."

Cheney is another Idi Amin. I believe he'll try some ham-handed power grab that gonzo says is perfectly legal (if gonzo is still around) and there will be an historic standoff. It might just be refusing to interact with Congress (Cheney already said they are irrelevant "they can't stop us"). Maybe more "signing statements" even more egregious than before.

Our congresscritters have struggled with how to tackle the power struggle over the CinC role. They won't struggle when openly defied. There will be a showdown.

And it will be BIG.

21. How can Bush save face and put this behind him?
He can show that he wants to cooperate by getting rid of Gonzoales
and at the same time appoint an Attorney General that we can all agree
deserves the postition for her work in fighting corruption Carol Lam!

just like the old man did to Lawrence Walsh during Iran Contra. They've missed the Friday deadline to notify Congress about WH officials testifying - this is EXACTLY what they did to Walsh.
