I take the park and ride bus every morning to go to work. This morning, after exiting the bus, a couple of co-workers and I stood at the corner waiting to cross the street. We have riders #1, 2 and 3 (I’m #1). We were chit chatting and complaining about being late because the HOV lane was bogged down. Then all of a sudden rider #3 said it was irritating because we all had to wait for the bus driver to unload the handicap guy that was on our bus. She went on about how it takes so long to do this. Now let me tell you, this procedure only takes a few minutes of our time. We were already running late and the handicap guy usually will take this same bus around the same time every morning (I figure she can leave earlier or later). In fact, I think it’s kind of neat that our buses are equipped to handle motorized wheel chairs. After rider #3 said that selfish statement, rider #2 told her that he has to work too just like everybody else. Then rider #3 said “well, he should be on a special bus”. We both just kind of looked at her weird and started walking into the building (it was chilly so we were walking fast).
I didn’t say anything because I couldn’t believe that she said that, I just nodded in agreement about him having to work too. Rider #3 is an executive and have been working with this company for a long time. I was dumbfounded. I knew there were selfish people but I didn’t realize she was one of them. I feel so sad for her for feeling this way towards handicapped people.:-(
