Conservative Talk Show Host Charged With Rape

A former conservative radio host who dubbed himself the "Crossover Negro" was ordered held without bail in Massachusetts on Thursday, a day after being picked up as a fugitive from a rape charge in New York.

Reese Hopkins, whose real name is Edward Maurice Hopkins, pleaded not guilty in Malden District Court to being a fugitive from justice. He was arrested in his Malden home on Wednesday night.

Hopkins said a former friend of his daughter accused him of raping her in 2004, when he was living in Manchester, Conn. He denied the charge.

"I couldn't have been there," Hopkins said as he was loaded into a Middlesex County sheriff's van at the courthouse. When asked by a reporter if the woman had a vendetta against him, he said, "I believe it might be, but I don't know why." He was forced to leave before offering more details of the incident.

The 39-year-old was laid off last week from WRKO-AM in Boston, where he hosted a morning talk show. He worked in New York from 2001 to 2005, where the Jewish-African-American host billed himself as the "Crossover Negro."
