Sorry, I Can’t Find Your Name -- RE: VOTER DISENFRANCHISEMENT -- PLEASE READ!!!
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 12:17 PM by Lithos
I've already posted this in General Discussion: Presidential and I know this is an editorial but I'm posting it again here because it may very well be the most important piece voters can read prior to Election Day. I posted ACORN's full page NY Times ad yesterday and urged everyone to check with their local election board to make absolutely certain they haven't been purged from voter roles and are eligible to vote. This NY Times editorial deals with the very same subject. I'm posting it in its entirety for those who do not have online access to The NY Times.

Please read this and bump it up because Republican voter purges and voter disenfranchisement are in full swing all across America and the outcome of this election could very well hang in the balance. This editorial contains information that can help voters make sure they are eligible to vote and that their votes will in fact be counted.

Editorial

Sorry, I Can’t Find Your Name

Before Mississippi’s March presidential primary, one county election official improperly removed more than 8,000 voters from the eligible-voter rolls, including a Republican Congressional candidate. Fortunately, the secretary of state’s office learned of the purge in time and restored the voters.

For this election, voters need to be prepared to fight for their right to cast a ballot. They should try to confirm before Nov. 4 that they are on the rolls — something that in many states can be done on a secretary of state or board of elections Web site. If their state permits it, they should vote early. Any voter who finds that their name has disappeared from the rolls will then have time to challenge mistakes.

If voters find on Election Day that their names are not on the rolls, they should contact a voters’ rights group like Election Protection, at 1-866-OUR-VOTE, or a political campaign, which can advocate for them. They should not, except as a last resort, cast a provisional ballot, since it is less likely to be counted.

There is a desperate need for reform of the way voting rolls are kept. Until then, election officials, voting rights advocates and voters must do everything they can to ensure that all eligible voters are allowed to vote.

Please, people, Election Day is less that two weeks away. If you haven't done so already, verify that you are eligible to vote NOW so that you can be sure of your eligibility before Election Day. Don't wait until you show up at the polls. It's too late then. They'll try to hand you a provisional ballot to satisfy you but provisional ballots are just their way of getting you out of the polling place. There is a high likelihood that provisional ballots will NOT be counted.

VERIFY YOUR VOTING STATUS WITH YOUR LOCAL ELECTION BOARD TODAY. IF YOU LEARN THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM YOU WILL HAVE TIME TO FIX IT BEFORE ELECTION DAY.

2. If only it was that simple
Voters who have been purged can, in many cases, still vote BUT THEIR VOTES WILL NOT BE COUNTED. THEY WILL BE DISALLOWED AFTER THE FACT IF THEY HAVE BEEN PURGED FROM THE VOTER ROLES.

The only way to be absolutely sure your vote is counted is to verify your eligibility before you vote.

5. the American system is so undemocratic that it's hard to believe it.
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 09:14 AM by KitSileya
In Norway, we get a card in the mail about a month, month and a half before the election with our name, and our polling place. That is the polling place we have to use if we vote on election day. However, all libraries and post offices also have polling booths set up a month before election, where you can vote if you bring your card. If you cannot get to a pre-election polling place, or to your precinct on election day, you can contact your local election council and set up an appointment to vote, and proper election officials will come to the appointed place (usually hospitals, nursing homes etc) and you can vote. The government advertise in the media to tell people they've sent the cards, and what to do if you have not received one.

Edited to add. There's also lists at libraries etc where you can check if you are registered to vote before you get your card - just to make sure.

7. The America System was designed with election fraud in mind
The powers that be know they can't win if every eligible voter is allowed to cast a ballot and the vote is honestly tabulated.

This has been going on for many generations. It's only since the netroots have exposed it that the majority are beginning to realize the have been had.

when i just now voted we were told our voter registration card was not needed or proof of anything (not surprising since some of these were mailed probably years before, as i believe mine was as i haven't changed address for many a year), they were just informational (has my precinct on it)

what you needed to have was an ID such as a driver's license or a state ID for those too old/handicapped to drive, then they checked this against the log and you put your signature next to your name -- however, no one double checked to be sure my signature was the same as that on my driver's license -- hmmm, maybe i just have an honest face

if you have no ID at all you had to have a public utility bill showing your name and proof of address, however, i didn't see anyone try it, not many in louisiana could live a normal life w.out ID so this might just be in the rare case of having your wallet lost or stolen right before the election

6. I'm in the process of compiling state by state voter registration information
The information varies widely by state. Some states make voter registration information very easy, others very difficult. I'll post it here as soon as I have it all. I'm about half way through right now.

9. Voter information by state
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 10:37 AM by bobd0
I've searched for voter information and contact information where needed. If you don't find what you need just Google your state followed by "voting" and you'll get all the hits you could want.

Start with this link from Long Distnace Voter that provides links for states that have online voter registration verification.
http://www.longdistancevoter.org/verify_voter_registration

I may have duplicated some of the links but I tried to add additional contact information when I could find it. I'm under time constraints so, as I said, you can Google your state for more information.

If your state doesn't have online voter registration verification tools I've compiled the information I was able to find state by state.

15. Most Cities will have a Judge on hand for Election cases
and getting a Court Order to allow you to vote directly is usually an option. My experience is that if you show up in Court and go through the effort you'll probably get the Court to allow you to vote.

17. I called my county election board this morning and verified that I'm elegible.
It took only a couple of minutes. The election board official I spoke with seemed surprised that I called but I told her after reading about voter purges and all manner of Republican disenfranchisement efforts I wasn't taking any chances.

My county election official told me that New Jersey doesn't purge voter roles and they only remove voters from the roles if their sample ballot returns undeliverable AND they don't vote in two succeeding federal elections. That's the way I understood it. I hope that information is accurate. In any event, I'm sure I'm eligible and my name is on the voter roles because I took a couple of minutes and called, and to me a couple of minutes is worth that peace of mind BECAUSE WE CANNOT ALLOW THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WHICH HAS LED OUR NATION TO RUIN TO STEAL ANOTHER ELECTION.

Please take a couple of minutes to call your local election board or verify your status by using the online verification available for many states at the first link. And please tell everyone you know to do the same. There are only a few days left.

I WANT TO SEE AN OBAMA/BIDEN LANDSLIDE THE LIKES OF WHICH AMERICA HAS NEVER SEEN AND I WANT DEMOCRATIC LANDSLIDES IN BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS TOO.

We learned the hard way in 2000 and 2004. Let's not take any chances this time around. ;)
