A Review of W, by my favorite film critic...

snipet
John Powers once called Nixon-era Oliver Stone our most Nixonian director: smart, driven, divisive, unlikeable. So the neatest trick of Stone's latest biopic, W., is to make George W. Bush--arguably the most reviled, detached, ideologically arrogant president since James Buchanan--a figure of genuine pathos........

snipet

The logical end-point of wanting a President as ill-read, venal, and feckless as your alcoholic born-again Uncle Festus is a figure like Governor Sarah Palin, whose chief qualification appears to be her ability to blend into your local chapter of Oprah's Fan Club without a ripple. Hate, division, ugly innuendo, and racism: sowing fear and reaping the political benefits until the house falls down.

Walter Chaw, while being a little too picky sometimes, always entertains and educates me. Love him!

1. A trotskyist review, for comparison:

3. Yes, over the years, the WSWS has become quite famous for their art reviews.
Go figure.

4. sadistic
I thought both reviews made good points. The film totally overlooked and glossed over Bush's serious psychological disturbances and lifelong cruelties. Also from what I've read his difficulties began with a Mother who was cold and harsh and a Dad who was gone a lot, the Mom dealing with the death of another child.

According to this page (http://www.squadron13.com/JackDresser/psychoanalysis.htm), "in college, he hazed new fraternity pledges with branding irons on the buttocks. As Governor he mocked death-row inmates and smirked at their executions. As a political campaigner, he relies heavily on smug ridicule and mockery of opponents."

Also addresses his being so out of touch with reality.....

5. It's well done but I didn't really like it
I was glad we got free passes and didn't have to pay to see it.
