GOP pumping money into Terry campaign
BY ROBYNN TYSVER
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

The GOP cavalry rode into Nebraska on Tuesday to defend one of its own — Rep. Lee Terry — in his spirited race against Democrat Jim Esch.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said it will pump about $485,000 into the race. The investment in Nebraska comes as GOP incumbents across the nation face tight re-election bids.

The decision also comes about two weeks after the committee's Democratic counterpart poured about $450,000 into Nebraska in support of Esch.

"This levels the playing field," said David Boomer, Terry's campaign manager. "The DCCC bombarded the district with advertisements. The RNCC figured they would come in and defend us."

Democrats countered that the GOP money was evidence that the race was tight. A recent survey by Anzalone Liszt Research Inc., a Democratic polling firm, showed that Esch was in the hunt, pulling to within 1 percentage point of Terry.

Matt Connealy, executive director of the Nebraska Democratic Party, said it's good news for his party when national Republicans have to help a five-term incumbent.

"This is a different year," Connealy said. "Jim has run a great campaign, and he has a real pathway to make this happen."

Republicans and Democrats have said from the beginning that the 2nd Congressional District race had the potential to be close.
