What will become of the republican party?
When they rebuild will they get rid of the religious zealot assholes and go back to just being assholes? Perhaps the grassroots will work at kicking the money interests out? I don't know. But you'd think they would know they have to get rid of certain aspects of their party.

1. Maybe they'll just finish becoming a regional party...
...based on their "real America" observations, it seems to be what they want.

This will leave no leadership in the party for all intents and purposes. It's time for honest conservatives to form a new party that respects our Constitution.

5. The fundies and the fiscal conservatives will split.
They already hate each other. The neocons will die out. Corporatist will still infiltrate all parties.

10. Hard to predict, but I imagine the RW as we know it is gone.
They will come back in another form and will be smaller for a while. We may even get some new energy in the left out of this with a stronger Green Party and Democratic Socialist Party.

11. Put up moderates but still be run by wingnuts
I would assume moderates like Schwarzenegger, Crist, Powell or Chafee will become the new face of the GOP but the wingnuts will still pull the strings. AFter the public figures that out, no idea.

12. They'll come up with some bullshit some years down the road that'll fool the public.
Probably some patriotic red white & blue stuff that folks will fall for. Just hope we
can get some good stuff done before the peoples stupidity rears it's ugly head.

13. They'll have to shape up or ship out.
No more bullshit will be necessary from them until they learn to act right, I hope.

15. What becomes of the Republican party depends a great deal on how the Democrats govern.
If Democrats get too smug and self-assured with their time in power and act as though it will never end, then some form of the Republican party will be waiting to retake power. Let's be real about this because there is going to be some very hard work for Democrats to do and most like the Liberal wing of the party will not be happy because they are not getting all they want. There will be Republicans waiting to taking advantage of infighting and screwups.

16. Have no doubt. They are NOT finished.
Cons have always been in the picture. They will nominate some moderates, do a lot of research, and quickly find a strategy to gain lost ground.

Remember the press is still controlled by a few huge corporations. An uninformed electorate is putty in their hands.

17. Moderates will quietly leave the party.
The extremists will publicly and unashamedly take over.

They will shrink in size as more and more people either leave or simply not join.

They will either become Libertarians, Independents or join the Democratic party, which will see a splintering as well.

The main Democratic Party will be a huge super-majority centrist party and a portion of liberals will create their own "True Progressives" party, balancing the GOP extremists on the right.

This new progressive party will not be as extreme as the new, smaller GOP.

18. What becomes of Republicans largely depends on what becomes of Democrats and other events
How are the Democrats going to act on their mandate? If they concentrate on the economy, health care, and the war... and make some kind of measurable progress... they will be fine.

If they use this time to push fringe platform issues and alienate moderates... they may shorten their control.

If some horrible terrorist strike were to occur, and Obama somehow fails to respond... it may shorten their control.

If Iran tests a nuclear weapon... it may shorten their control.

The Republicans thought they would rule for 20 years when Bush won in 2000... the proceeded to fuck everything up. They aggressively pursued the issues of their fringe (marriage amendment, etc). They took us to war. They basically made an opening that conservative leaning moderates can no longer abide.

I would say it'll take 8-12 years of a highly successful Obama/Democrat presidency to firm up support from Moderates. If they can do that... it may be a very long time before the Republicans have a revival.
