The Photo That Moved Colin Powell Leftward

-snip-

Part of what turned the tide for Powell and made him jump ship from the R’s to the D’s was a photo by Platon in The New Yorker. It showed a mother draped over the tombstone of her son, a 20-year-old Muslim-American soldier named Cpl. Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. Powell said he was disheartened by the tone of the current Republican party and its anti-Islamic rhetoric directed at Obama.

2. That is a Pulitzer Prize quality photo if I ever saw one.
It may have the level of impact of that picture of the little Viet Namese girl running after her clothes were burned off by napalm.

3. At the time he said that
I wondered why he had to read the stone as the mothers scarf would have told an observer he was of arab/muslim decent..

This mom appears to be african american, I wonder if the son converted to Islam as a teen or if he was a "black Muslim"?

8. Colin Powell, who sired the former head of the FCC, has
not suddenly become a dove or a liberal. I will give that he is a thinking person and any thinking person can see the train wreck that is McCain/Palin. He's smart enough to know that those who hate Muslims also hate blacks and Jews. I bet he still considers himself a Repubican when it comes to policy.

There's a big hole in that family now. Oh man. That hurts. Thanks for posting it. What a good looking young man he was.

13. Just seeing "Operation Iraqi Freedom" on a military headstone disgusts me.
I know, that's not the point of the photo or the post, but it's true. It's such a fucking pathetic name for a war. It's not even a war, it's an operation!

Fuck these clowns. When Bush and Cheney die, I will make a special trip to dance on their graves.
