State urges Vermonters to prepare for pandemic
October 20, 2008

COLCHESTER, Vt.—The Vermont Department of Health is urging residents to prepare for a possible worldwide flu pandemic by stocking their pantries with enough food to stay home for two weeks.

People should buy things like dried foods that have a long shelf life, said Health Commissioner Wendy Davis.

"The idea behind that is that people might need to be home for a period even of up to two weeks while everybody's getting over being ill and while we're trying to contain the spread of illness," Davis said.

Public health officials say that during a flu pandemic families won't be able to go to work, school or the store and businesses will have to be able to operate for weeks without employees showing up for work.

Burlington is one of nine communities around the country taking part in a pilot project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to get ready for what scientists believe is the coming pandemic.

As evidence, experts point to the virulent, deadly flu strain that spread across the globe in 1918 and killed millions.

"And we think it's not unlikely that it could occur fairly soon," Davis said.

Oct 17-20 - ** SARANAC LAKE, NY - Powerful generals and admirals from some of the most powerful nations on Earth are reportedly meeting somewhere in the local area this weekend after flying into the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear on Friday.

10/01/2008 - ** SARANAC LAKE, NY – Dr. David L. Woodland, president and director of the Trudeau Institute, announced today that President Bush has signed into law the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009 (H.R. 2638), which includes $1.6 million in additional research funding to support a joint program between scientists at the Trudeau Institute and the U.S. Navy to develop a pandemic influenza vaccine. H.R. 2638 includes the Defense Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2009.

10/01/2008 - DHHS issued a Declaration under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act, declaring a public health emergency for anthrax. No discussion of why there is an emergency was provided. Not only did the declaration shield anthrax vaccine manufacturers and doctors who use the vaccine from liability for injuries that might arise: the declaration explicitly shielded "government program planners" who might recommend anthrax vaccine or other anthrax countermeasures.

10/01/2008 - U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team began Homeland Duty

hmmmmm..... ignore the tinfoil conspiracy nuts who talk about the plastic burial containers stacked up around our country and Canada

2. Add to that the fact the Ft. Detrick guys
have been working on a sample of the 1918 flu virus. They actually found a burial site and dug up a body to get at the DNA.

14. Yea
but that particular virus is no longer a problem for us. A lot of the seasonal strains are descendants of that flu and it can't wipe us out in large numbers like a new novel virus could.

4. Here is something scary to add.... 2009 Astrological Profile indicates:
"throughout this entire year Jupiter, Neptune, Chiron have close
conjunctions in Aquarius. This would herald a biological health intervention,
finding, discovery that is global or large in impact. It is a significant
constellation of energies in Aquarius all year."
http://www.astroprofile.com/2009sky.htm

Starting January 20th through January 24th, 2009 and repeating throughout the
entire year in various months.

What was that that Powell and Biden said about those dates?
Perhaps the PNAC plans to release their bio-genetic specific
weapons then? Wolfowitz must be so happy.
Hmmm.

8. I'm past scared- I'm just accepting it all, living well in the moment.
These things are SO out of our hands at this point.
We have no representation in our government, just an
endless parade of Kabuki actors parading across
the stage to convince the masses that they have
a voice.

WE don't.

What will be, will be.
Prepare for the worst, and then for some more.

5. Not unusual at all
the whole world is doing this and as we enter the flu season every year the potential of H5N1 which is now endemic in poultry in a whole lot of countries to go pandemic increases. Every country in the world is preparing and refining their plans and there are headlines all over the world addressing this. The UN just came out with a statement and it is running in most countries today.

It is prudent to have a few weeks supplies on hand as if something like this happens we are on our own. It is just a topic which has fallen off the MSM's radar but it is still big news in the countries where cases are happening. We are lucky it has not mutated to go pandemic.

10. There have been psa's running
for the past several years off and on but they have been few. The gov has had a site for the past few years also http://www.ready.gov/america/getakit/index.html
They have had online chats to get people's input on planning.
Every state has on their website a pandemic flu plan. some are pretty good, most are horrible.

I follow emerging infectious diseases as a hobby and the big complaint on pandemic flu has been that there has not been enough public education and the public health people agree.

Big corporations have developed pandemic flu plans.
My husband is a family physician and owns his practice and we have a plan in place also.
My sister works emergency disaster on the medical end in the air force and she does briefings all over the country re this subject and others.
The bottom line is if it happens, you are on your own and you need to have at least a minimum of supplies because there will be a huge breakdown in everything till it passes and you will get no assistance whatsoever as it will be a global event.

17. What do you think of the Vermont recommendation
for people to stock up on 2 weeks worth of food? If this pandemic happens it certainly is not going to pass in 2 WEEKS, not even 2 months. I appreciate your info, BTW. Thanks.

19. Not enough
but there are a lot of people who would be hard pressed to even do 2 weeks. The 1918 pandemic had three waves over 18 months I believe. I think each wave was about six to eight weeks.
Plus there are plans to close schools so families need to think of having all three meals at home instead of part of them outside the home which will require more food to be stocked up.
This website probably has the most comprehensive info on pandemics and what to do to prepare on the internet.

9. I keep camping supplies in my trunk
and they include about a week's worth of various dried food, water purifier, camping stove, sleeping bags, light tent, etc.

It's basically for earthquake preparedness- we're overdue for a slip on the Cascade subduction zone- but it'd do for a pandemic.

Not a bad idea to keep food like that around. LED flashlights and batteries are a good idea, too. Not long back we had an ice storm where people in many areas had no power for about a week- and it's not very wise to try to drive (ot even walk) to the store when everything's covered by an inch of rime ice.

11. That would not be popular at all, nw would it?
Paranoia running wild here. Considering Joe Biden's comments about an international crisis--and the McPalin obsession with them--I think I'll be laying in a food supply.

What did Joe say? Something about unpopular, drastic measures that will seem wrong?

12. Okay, I missed that- WTF are you referring to?
"unpopular, drastic measures that will seem wrong?"

That is really unsettling, given the powers, signed by Bush,
that the next administration will inherit.

Can you give me more details, I missed THAT comment.

16. The talking heads, Tweety, Anderson Cooper, et al were
obsessing about Biden's comments to a group of supporters yesterday, October 21. They had clips of Sarah wondering "what did Joe mean?"

Sorry, I don't have clips or links.

15. This isn't the way the flu will come
At least it isn't they way the 1918 flu came. It was actually a long drawn out process and wasn't in and out in two weeks. Is it a coincidence that the election is in two weeks? Someone's trying too hard to frighten us. Don't let them.
