Poll question: NFL or MLB?
Okay, as a baseball fan I'm into suffering and I've gotta know. How bad is it? "I fear for the Republic."

22. I love MLB, especially my Rays being in the World Series
But nothing, and I mean nothing, gets better than college football. I wholeheartedly agree.

13. Only the ALDS and ALCS were on cable (TBS)
Next year, it'll be the NLDS and NLCS.

The gist of your point is true, though. There're at least 11,000 NFL and college football games on broadcast teevee every weekend, but if I wanna watch more than about six Dodgers games per year, I'm forced to cable up — and to a rather high-priced tier.

It's getting worse even in home markets. I live in Giants country, and last year they ended a long-time relationship with an Oakland station and switched to one in San Jose. The result? From about 40 over-the-air games to about 20.

20. Sorry, man
One of my closest friends is a die-hard Cubs fan. For that reason, and that I thought they were the better ball club, I didn't want to start the playoffs against them.

I certainly didn't expect a sweep — hell, I thought you were gonna kick our asses — and I didn't really want one because five games is sixty percent more baseball than three games, and more baseball is always good.

97 wins, best record they've had since 1945. This was the year. Those Fuckin losers. There's always next year. :puke:

Still got hope for the Bears though.

34. Please refer to them as division series and The Pennant...
I hate those disease-like abbreviations. NLDS sounds like some kind of nervous disorder, ALCS sounds fatal.

26. MLB sucks.
Except for elimination games in playoff series, any one particular game is absolutely MEANINGLESS. Hell, a team could go on a 16-game losing streak and still be in fine shape for a rally later. An NFL team that goes on a 16-game losing streak would probably result in a new coaching staff, 50% turnover in the roster, and maybe even a new GM.

ESPN Page 2's TMQ did a great comparison one time, NFL records vs. MLB records and what qualifies for the playoffs, etc. It was crazy. Basically the worst team in baseball finished with the equivalent of a 7-9 NFL record, and the best team in baseball finished with the equivalent of 9-7. Mediocrity from top to bottom.

27. Are you honestly trying to draw a statistical comparison
between two sports that could hardly be more different?

30. Not a comparison of game stats
but of W/L, the importance of single games, and the overall variety in team quality in each league.

33. Yes, I understand that
But if you're going to compare a sport with a 162-game season to one with a 16-game season, along with the myriad other differences between them, and determine "quality" on that basis, you might as well compare apples to tungsten carbide drills while you're at it and conclude that tungsten carbide drills are of better quality.

35. If intensity and importance of individual games appeal to you,
then you're probably more likely to be an NFL fan than an MLB one. Funny how the NFL has all the parity-enhancing features like revenue sharing and salary caps, yet baseball is the sport that turns out mediocrity season after season.

36. What you call 'mediocrity,' others would call 'Greater competitive parity'
That's one of the many things about baseball that appeal to me. Even when it's a league leader against a "cellar dweller," the outcome is in doubt. In football, it's less a question of who'll win and more one of the point spread.

I appreciate a level playing field in all aspects of my life, including the sports I watch.

31. If you were really into the game, rather than some superficial numbers...
you would come to understand that every game matters. Every single game and every inning and run from April into at least July and August when teams start dropping out of contention. Not just in the standings, but in the flow of the team's fortunes and play over time. It's true, it requires the greatest marathon of fanatical devotion in sport.

If on the other hand you want the instant results and single night's entertainment of a boxing match, then no, baseball is not the sport for you to follow. Then again, a single game is its own reward. Who cares who wins, if it's a beautiful day?

39. That reminds me:
In 1984, RIF sponsored a box at the minor-league stadium in my home town. The placard on it read, "Reading Is Fundemental."

I was sooooo tempted to write beneath it, "But, apparently, spelling doesn't count for shit."
