WTF? CT Gov. Jodi Rell running commercials warning us to stock up on canned goods...
Edited on Wed Oct-22-08 12:51 PM by Atman
...and be prepared for a FLU PANDEMIC. It's weird. It's like any other PSA, except for that the freakin' Governor is on telling us how to sneeze properly to avoid spreading germs, and how to protect yourself from others, and then suggests we should all stock up on canned goods and drinking water and be prepared for the worst. Big letters "FLU PANDEMIC" and some state government web site end the commercial.

Too many things are making me go "hmmmmm" these days. It's a bit disconcerting.

2. Recycling the flu scare of 2006
We at the clinic recommend that people build up their immune systems and take common sense precautions against germs. Neither involve stocking up on canned goods.

8. The whole world is telling
their population the same thing. New Zealand seems to have the best overall plan and they have preparedness info in the back pages of their phone books. It is a prudent thing to do. The H5N1 virus is still infecting a few people a week. It may or may not be the cause of the next pandemic and we are overdue.

I am glad he is doing the PSA. Bottom line is we are on our own if one happens. The US has a long way to go in completing our pandemic plan and it does not help that Chertoff and Levitt are fixated on anthrax. It is a subject I have an interest in and I follow it closely.

This article or one like it is running worldwide in most languages today.
http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSTRE49K8BY20081021?feedType=RSS&feedName=scienceNews

Just because it has not been in the MSM much does not mean that there has not been plenty of news in other languages and countries nor that the threat has lessened.

23. We've been on our own for years
In 2006, the nonprofit where I work held a seminar on the bird flu pandemic. Our local county judge came and basically said "You are on your own". What he stressed was not buying canned goods but rather stocking up on water. We then had one of our doctors explain what people could do to build up their immune systems to help keep them from getting sick (or as sick).

4. Honestly, Flu Pandemic, its the same thing as predicting rain at least once in 10 years....
Flu Pandemics are unavoidable over the long term. Now, telling people to stock up because one is going to happen SOON is over the top. But eventually, we'll have one.

9. I just added this to another thread related to this topic- 2009 astro prediction
Here is a link to the thread and a copy of my post on it-
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4287495

"throughout this entire year Jupiter, Neptune, Chiron have close
conjunctions in Aquarius. This would herald a biological health intervention,
finding, discovery that is global or large in impact. It is a significant
constellation of energies in Aquarius all year."
http://www.astroprofile.com/2009sky.htm

Starting January 20th through January 24th, 2009 and repeating throughout the
entire year in various months.

What was that that Powell and Biden said about those dates?
Perhaps the PNAC plans to release their bio-genetic specific
weapons then? Wolfowitz must be so happy.
Hmmm.

Yes, I said satanists.

By their fruits, ye shall know them.
Palin unleashing this 24/7 hate fest while
professing to be a "christian" is the perfect example
of a wolf in sheep's clothing, the angel of darkness appearing as
light, and just plain ROTTEN fruit from a wicked tree.
She WILL burn in hell, trust me on that.

14. OK....
So they are saying if you get the flu, you'll be confined to your home until you get better? Most of us have other family members or friends that could make runs to the store for us... or usually one is able to make quick outings even if you are sick.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems a bit excessive to advise folks to stockpile canned goods.

19. You may not even be allowed to go out.
There could be martial law, or -- thus the pandemic part -- all those family members could also be sick at the same time.

24. Most people
who are getting this particular flu die. A pandemic will mean a novel virus you have no immunity to. Hopefully the case fatality rate of one if it happens will be low. They expect everything to be disrupted from shipments of food to stores, hospitals being overwhelmed within days, pharmacies running out of meds quickly, mortuaries with no way to adequately bury the amt of bodies they will get, you name it. There will be no running out to the store by relatives.
Google the 1918 pandemic for an overview.
A great seminar was given by Dr Osterholm a few years ago on what might be expected along with the greatest medical reporter in my book Helen Branswell. We have a just in time delivery service in this country. There are no warehouses full of extra inventory.

26. Wow...

I guess I always assumed that all of these types of dire predictions were just so much hysteria... with little actual factual basis. I suppose we are all so spoiled these days, what with anti-biotics and the whole array of very effective medications. The idea of something like this seems almost archaic.... and very terrifying.

Do you think the predictions are legit?

27. Yes, it is why the world has been preparing.
Just a matter of when and no one knows if it will be this year or ten years from now. Somewhere on the web is Obama's thoughts on pandemic planning which I read a while back.

this morning from my mother in MA. She and my dad had just come back from a regular doctor visit, and he practically demanded that they both get flu shots immediately, and encouraged them to tell their family to get them too.

25. A friend who is an environmental scientist traveled to the CDC regarding this possible pandemic
She is not one to over react, but after her seeing reactions of CDC scientists she came home very concerned. She considered not sending her daughter back to college this year. She was told that it might be so severe that we could be w/o power for an extended period.

I've stocked up on can goods, supplies, but I live in an area that bad winter weather can also create needs for goods. Better safe than sorry.
