I like paying taxes.
Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said that and I agree.

“I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.”

This came from a friend of mine along with a link to a NYT Tom Friedman piece about Palin:

No one likes paying taxes. But think of the alternative. Is it really UNpatriotic to pay one's fair share of taxes, as Governor Sarah Palin says? And how can it possibly be called "Socialism" to pay taxes that will support our civilized way of life and to try to make our country better for everyone? Please. How else can we afford those things that make the USA such a great place to live? Security, Education, Environmental Protection, Culture, Social Security, Medicare, you name it.

1. Excellent point. Who was it that said it is Patriotic to pay your
fair share of taxes? O boy this election is so full of good information. I need a bigger filing cabinet in my head.

4. I've had years where I paid taxes in the highest bracket and years where I didn't pay taxes at all.
All things considered, I very much preferred the former to the latter.

5. I used to like it too.
I was very appreciative that I had earned enough money to help support others and was glad to be in that position.

Now, how they spent it was another matter, entirely.:grr:

6. the Cathy comic strip had a few where her accountant told her where her taxes went
One year she was paying for a committee to investigate why a certain Congressional committee got free donuts.

She said "wtf?"

and her accountant said "Don't feel bad. Last year you paid for the donuts."

One problem is that the press reports, as they should, instances of Government waste, fraud, and abuse. So most taxpayers feel like they know about some government waste, whether it is somebody on welfare who should/could get a job, or whether it is the janitors at the community center who get paid too much and screw around too much instead of working (that's where I work) or whether it is a stupid pork barrel project.

Second, people have this attitude that "the government is wasting MY money" as if they pay more than .000001% of all the country's taxes. I pay about $2,000 in FICA taxes, for example, which is .00000035% of the over $600 billion in FICA taxes collected.

So many of us get more than our share of the benefits for something like the Interstate highway system, for example, than the share we pay of the costs. Not to mention things like food safety and clean water, etc. Yet those same people will be encouraged to complain about the 5% of waste that they can see (or are told about) while ignoring the 95% of the benefits they get from government programs. Only bad things are news, you see, and Candidate X can only get elected if they say bad things about their opponent.

“I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.”

It seems like the more taxes I pay, the less civilized things are becoming.
The corporations pass on the taxes they pay to the consumer. The worker bees can't pass their taxes on to anyone.
If this is civilization, I'll take anarchy.

Really? I find it hard to believe that 100 years ago a middle class actually existed. It's a modern day thing, you know?

10. Still Deciding?
So, would you prefer the chicken or the platter of shit with bits of broken glass?

And now I bet you're going to ask how the chicken is cooked.

I didn't check its status.

Good thing is that it kicked my post - so I have to say thank you there.

And do you think it enjoyed what it got?

I think those bits of broken glass are going to hurt later.

13. I took a while to compose my post wondering all the time if the
ex-poster would still be there. I had a feeling its existence here was short lived.

In the meantime, I get to kick your thread again. :D

As I was typing, I figured the poster would be gone but I was hoping the information might be useful in case that kind of crap pops up again so I kept typing.

You're welcome. Thank you. And, another kick.

:hi:
