Obama "bat signal" appears in Raleigh NC. (Pic)
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 09:58 PM by Lex

"The bat signal is a modified spotlight to project the iconic bat symbol into the sky or onto a building to contact and request the presence of Batman in the case of an emergency. The Obama signal above appears to indicate we are in an emergency and his assistance is needed to get us out of it."

75. Agreed: some creativity in Raleigh is rare...
Glad to see a glimmer of what we used to have a lot more of.

The creative Oxygen really got sucked out of the Triangle post 9-11; it regressed
to beyond dull.

Go Obama.

Go Helios.

28. I'll be the contrary voice
I don't live in the US, but it seems to me that there is enough media saturation with the Barack Obama campaign. Any more and it gets creepy. Just from reading DU, it seems that there are a lot of campaign commercials on TV and of course, the race dominates the news cycle.

Best not to invade people's private spaces beyond polite yard signs. I am as happy as any other Barack supporter today, but I think that having this kind of lighting all over the country would be too "Big Brother"-ish. The President is not supposed to be a King, nor a "Leader."

The President is not a leader? Are you perhaps puffing at an Amsterdam "cafe" as you write such nonsense?

Also, you are not a "contrary" voice, you are a scold.

57. It's not all over the country.
This is the only "bat sign" I've seen.

I live in New York, and don't watch television, and I've seen NO political ads this year except for the ones on the edge of my computer screen.

The whole campaign is very targeted, not blanketed.

About the only political ads out here are pro/con for the various propositions. Obama doesn't need to spend the money for expensive CA TV market; mclame can't afford it and it would be a waste of his limited resources. i don't think he has even been here - mcpalin was in Orange County & 500 people showed up to protest her.

74. Not here there's not!
I also live in Raleigh and I can tell you that there is very little Obama media saturation here. The news stations and papers all lean toward McCain/Palin (with the exception of The Independent). In my neighborhood, which is just outside of downtown where this was shot, there are three McCain signs to every Obama sign. Mine is the only Obama sign on my street. So while there may be more Obama-mania elsewhere, I must say I am heartened to see someone doing a full scale art piece like this. Finally. In Raleigh. It gives me hope. I have voted democratic in every election since Carter and my vote has never counted. Our state is definitely a red state. I sure hope my vote is going to count this time.

78. Most americans (IMO) don't watch much
if any of the news. they watch reality TV, tune out the commercials and skim through the local newspaper. I was talking to the man who mows my lawn and he had no idea that John McCain had been married previous to Cindy. I don't think the general public is too "plugged in". Unlike the vast majority of us here.

I think if the Joe the Plumbers & Joe Six Packs got their facts from anything more than bumper stickers and 30 second sound bytes (when they can't hit the mute button fast enough) there'd be less ersatz "facts" about BOTH candidates. Alas, the self-focused culture we've fostered has taught us that the stuff "out there" only matters when WE directly interact with it. :dunce:

79. psychopomp indeed
we need a very strong movement right now. I don't think this is in any way harmful. I too live outside the country. My EU friends are holding their breath. Not for Obama, but for the American people. They want change. They want to see that we know how screwed up things have gotten, and that we are ready to be part of the solution-whatever that is. The president needs to be a leader. That is why Obama is ahead. Even republicans are responding to the urgent need for a leader. The times demand it.

Americans are waking up after a long period of madness. Many have allowed themselves to pretend that our way of life has been sustainable, despite growing evidence to the contrary. Easy credit has allowed many to continue with the illusion that the country has been prospering. When I say sustainable, I am not speaking only of ecological issues. Our fellow world citizens have been wondering just how long our little game of "let's pretend" could go on. As in "let's pretend we are the mostus important people in the whole world", or "let's pretend that God thinks we're special."
Many in this country have been downright childish- sitting still like good children placated with toys that harm others while we play with them.

I hope we are all getting our news from sources other than DU, although DU is a very good thing, we do not own the truth, only our piece of it.

Besides...

The side of a building is not a private space. Our buildings are covered with all kinds of corporate messages. "Top down" messages that we can't not see. At least this one is "Bottom up".

I'm not sure where you're coming from on this.

83. I see your point (re "leader"), and that would be abhorrent were he in office. But during a campaign
... it's just another commercial. A creative and unusual one, but a commercial nonetheless. Advertising is a large part of political campaigns.

85. With all due respect, our Presidents are not Prime Ministers....
Our constitution gives our President a unique role as both the executive head of domestic administration AND the commander in chief. His (or Hers one day) responsibilities most definitely require a leader that can mobilize and inspire us to achieve collectively what we cannot as individuals. The fact that we have lacked such a leader for the past 8 years only highlights the crucial need to elect one now.

As for "Big Brother" -- there is a world of difference between a ruler who dictates and direct the actions of his/her subjects and a leader who inspires citizens to exert their power for the common good.

76. How about outside of one of his campaign stops
Borrow or rent a room nearby and shine it on the same building as the McCain event. That would probably cause that crowd that McCains so proud of to go totally bat sh*t, so I guess if you did that you'd have to have a good escape plan ready.

Lots of sidewalk to light on and everyone will catch on.
Time to experiment...
