OBNOXIOUSLY WRITTEN BALLOT ISSUES AND AMENDMENTS.
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 02:18 AM by backscatter712
SHALL WE ALL HATE BALLOT INITIATIVES WRITTEN IN VERY LENGTHY LANGUAGE; THAT IS ONE CONTINUOUS RUN-ON-SENTENCE; THAT IS WRITTEN IN ALL-CAPS; AND WRITTEN IN SUCH A WAY AS TO BE AS OBTUSE AS POSSIBLE, IN VERY TECHNICAL LEGAL LANGUAGE, ALWAYS OBFUSCATED, FREQUENTLY OUTRIGHT DECEPTIVE, AND ALWAYS INCOMPREHENSIBLE; IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOU CAN'T TELL WHETHER YOU WANT TO VOTE YES OR NO; THE RESULT BEING VOTERS THAT HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO VOTE ON THESE INITIATIVES, AND WANTING TO DRIVE AN ICEPICK THROUGH THEIR TEMPLES BECAUSE THE SINGLE INSANELY LONG RUN-ON SENTENCE IN ALL CAPS COMPLETELY SPRAINS THEIR BRAINS?

3. Ain't that the truth.
The thing that gets me is that even the most innocuous ballot questions, like the ones that do the mundane stuff like removing obsolete statutes from the books and such, can be written in the same way.

But what really pisses me off are the deceptively written amendments, like Colorado's Amendment 46, which is written using the shiny happy language of civil rights and anti-discrimination law, but actually is designed to kill affirmative action.

Thank goodness for Google, I voted no on CO 46 and emailed links to all my CO friends to do the same.

Edit to add: Pass the ice pick.

6. I love Ohio ballots.
They have the same horribly written issue and amendment language as all the rest...then, below, they have a translation of what the thing means in normal, comprehensible English.

7. I wish Colorado ballots had that.
My ballot just had the gawd-awful ballotese.
