"Well then why don't you join the army?"
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 10:48 PM by otherlander
It's usually a pretty good line to throw back at conservative teenagers who defend the Iraq war and other Republican idiocy. But what do you say when they do join the army? There's this Republican girl/woman in one of my classes who's also in the ROTC; I see her walking places in her uniform sometimes. Maybe I should just respect her even though I disagree with her politics, just because she's putting a lot more on the line for her beliefs than I am for mine, but damn, she says the dumbest things sometimes. Like the other day when she said that most bi's were actually closet gays. What the hell, yo? I know, I know, I should have said something about that, but I had a really bad headache and I just wanted the class to be over so I could go back to my dorm and take some Advil.

On Edit: She also buys into the whole sexist thing that guys sleeping around = cool, girls sleeping around = slutty, thinks open relationships are immoral, and thinks that Saddam Hussein was a military threat to us. Grr.

2. You thank her for her service
and wish her good luck in 1) returning home, and 2) dealing with a VA that has been gutted with Booooooooo$hite$ when she does return home.

Some things must be learned by experience--which is a lesson she will now have an opportunity to learn firsthand.

5. ROTC? She's not even a "Boot"...
not even a Fucking New Guy. Wait 'til she lives in mud and sand and gets shot at a bit.

If she still believes all that shit... well... OK, I guess.

Until then, she's just a wannabe.

6. I also tell people, truthfully, that I'm a platelet donor at Walter Reed when they criticize my ...
opposition to the war in Iraq.

7. Let her complete one tour of Iraq
It changes few minds. I used to get these young ones in my platoon all the time and they were all gung-ho and kick-some-ass. I used to tell them, you will change your mind after about 15 days in Iraq. They tell me they join the Army and will do 20 years. After that first tour, they're already clearing and ETSing.

9. One consolation - they won't be *coming back* as Republicans
I can't remember the statistics, but I think that returning vets have been found to be overwhelmingly AGAINST GOP foreign policies once they return home. Either that or they withdraw from society altogether.

Many eyes have been opened by a tour in Iraq.
