Just pork and something along the lines of a red pepper and vinegar sauce. Only type they serve in the Outer Banks area.

I knew the western area has something different but I thought that was "mustardy" type. I was totally unaware that they had a tomato-based BBQ as well.

That is where I had BBQ when I was about 15/16 years old. It was a little spicy for me, but then I have very sensitive taste buds. Some have been killed off but still more sensitive to taste than most people's are. I should have been a taste tester. ;)

I'd heard it called "Thai ketchup" and when I first tried it I was like, huh? But now I use so much of it that I can see how it got that nickname.

P.S. It does not contain tomatoes. Just the standard chiles and vinegar and salt, but it also has some sugar so it tastes sweeter than your regular hot sauce.
