notes from a very small town about obama
the town i live in is so small that the town newspaper only comes out on sunday and its free.
today the paper had an article in it about the town bakery.
every election year the bakery makes cookies denoting which candidate is being picked by the town residents. people come
in and fill out their choices for president..and the bakery makes a cookie with the name of that choice on the cookies.
the article showed a picture of the bakery personnel standing in front of huge swaths of cookies they made.
for the first time, ever, in this usually republican town, obama is winning 3-1.
this is a town i have lived in since 1990. never have i seen it go democratic as a majority.
the people at the bakery insist that they have never ever seen anything like this. they said that whomever gets the most cookies every year they have done this is always the candidate who wins.
so, if this teeny town is a microcosm of the rest of the country, obama wins, 3-1.
peace out.

5. Excellent! And now for some good news from Nebraska
(where I used to live):

"Nearly 27,000 new Democrats have registered since Jan. 15. Meanwhile, the number of registered Republicans has fallen by 900."

9. There's an untold story in these small towns and villages
We live on a farm and the nearest population center is a tiny village about a mile away. (The official population of 199 includes everyone living on the surrounding farms). We're a blue state, capably represented in the Senate by Dick Durbin and Barack Obama, but this is a red red red county.

When Obama was first running for Senator here, I went to the little mom and pop store in the village and was surprised to find it full of little old blue haired ladies, all dressed up and chattering excitedly. Turns out they were waiting for one woman's son to bring the van around and pick them up.

"We're going to see that nice Bocker Boomer speak!"

Half of them still can't pronounce his name. I hear Bocker Boomer, Barker Bama, and several other permutations, but whatever they call him, they include "nice." "That nice Bocker Boomer." "That nice Barker Bama." "That nice Booker Oberman"

I don't know who they're calling when the polls say Obama has a problem with small town residents or with older women. I can tell you they're not calling here. We sent him to Washington once and we'll gladly send him again - this time to a bigger, nicer house, heh heh!
